Former New York Yankee Hideki Matsui will throw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, as 27-time MLB champions continue their attempt to stay alive against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In Game 4 yesterday, the Yankees avoided elimination by beating the Dodgers 11-4 in New York, cutting Los Angeles’ series to 3-1. However, the Dodgers remain one win away from winning the best-of-seven championship game and will get their second chance to claim the Commissioner’s Trophy when the teams face off again tonight at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are trying to pull off the unprecedented; No team in the 121-year history of the World Series has come back from a 3-0 deficit to be crowned MLB champions.

Who is Hideki Matsui?

Matsui spent 10 seasons in the MLB between 2003 and 2012, enjoying the pinnacle of his North American career with the Yankees. In 2009, the designated hitter threw sdestined for New York as the franchise won its most recent championshipby beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in the World Series. Matsui, nicknamed “Godzilla,” won the World Series MVP award.

A two-time All-Star, Matsui also played for the Los Angeles Angels, the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays in MLB. Before moving to the United States, he was a three-time Japanese champion with the Yomiuri Giants in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league, earning the 2000 Japan Series MVP award.
