Who will win the 2024 presidential election? Election Day voting

play

On Election Day, the polls are open and many voters are already lining up to cast their votes for who they think should be the next President of the United States, among other political seats at stake this year.

When Election Day arrived, it was still a tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris over who would sit in the White House for the next four years. National polls leading up to Election Day on November 5, 2024 showed Harris with only a narrow lead over Trump, so it’s still anyone’s race.

Here’s a look at the latest polls released Tuesday morning and everything else you need to know on Election Day.

Who will be ahead in the presidential elections on Tuesday, November 5, Election Day?

Multiple polls were released on the morning of November 5, 2024, with a final analysis of which candidate was ahead as voters began making their way to the polls.

  • ABC News Project 538: The latest poll shows Harris with a 48.0% to 46.8% lead over Trump.
  • 270drag: A summary of the latest national polls shows that Harris currently has a 1.2% lead over Trump.
  • Realclear poll: Here are the latest betting odds, which currently favor Harris to win, with the spread giving her an edge of +.1. How do the odds change? The lead went to Trump with +0.3 on Friday, +01 on Monday morning and there was even a stalemate on Monday afternoon.

When do we vote in the US?

Today! Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024 for the US general election.

When will we know who will be elected president?

That may take some time.

The anticipation surrounding election night and its outcome does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be tomorrow morning. In 2020, President Joe Biden’s victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters can vote during early voting and on Election Day for the candidates they believe are best for the political office they are running for. But it takes some time to count all the ballots, depending on the state and current laws regarding elections.

Federal law requires governors to prepare documents called certificates of assurance that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to vote for a president and vice president. Secretaries of State, or other official depending on the state, compile the election results of local and provincial governments so that the winner can be declared.

Representatives of the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia — all states leaning toward Harris in the polls — told USA TODAY that they plan to announce the results regardless of the winner. And top election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be swayed.

Who is expected to win the presidential race?

In September, Allan Lichtman, a historian known for accurately predicting nine of the ten most recent presidential elections, chose Harris as the next president of the United States, and his prediction still stands just days before Election Day.

On Tuesday, Lichtman repeated his prediction of a Harris win on his YouTube channel, despite Harris’ battleground lead shrinking and polls close.

“Nothing has changed that could change my prediction that I made on September 5,” Lichtman said, “despite the polls.”

Is Election Day a Federal Holiday?

No Election Day is not a federal holiday, but some places may be closed on Election Day depending on your region and which buildings are used as polling places.
