Why are rookies having more influence on the game than ever before?

Rookie wide receivers have had a lot of success in recent seasons. Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor believes this is partly due to the progress of the National Football League.

There’s no denying that the league was starting to transition into a more transient league.

“I think the game is definitely moving more towards a passing competition,” Taylor said. “I think it’s true to say. The average yards per quarterback and things like that, everyone now throws for over 4,000 yards every season, whereas before it wasn’t as common. I think that’s partly because of the way these kids are growing up now.”

Taylor noted that most of the skill players who entered the league now grew up with a different way to prepare themselves to move up the ranks. Skills training has allowed players to develop much faster and at a much younger age, shortening their learning curve when reaching the league.

“I mean, these kids grew up playing seven-on-seven all the time,” Taylor said. “So they’ve seen all these reports. They’ve seen all these route concepts to places that aren’t that surprising or overwhelming early in their careers. But at the same time, I think it’s an honor for the kids who come out.”

Taylor called Thomas flexible enough to help the team in multiple ways even when he’s not the primary target on a play. Thomas’ flexibility was on display Sunday in the team’s first win of the season against the Indianapolis Colts.

“They can handle a lot. Brian (WR Brian Thomas Jr.), you would never know it, but Brian plays multiple positions for us throughout the game. He and Gabe (WR Gabe Davis) and Christian (WR Christian Kirk) are constantly changing who they are in the group.

“And that’s something that no one would ever notice, but it gives us so much flexibility as a coaching staff to be able to kind of narrow down the play-calling because we can just handle it with personnel grouping. But that’s an honor for our guys. You can’t always do that to everyone. It confuses people. It slows down processing.”

“With Brian he hasn’t missed a second in that respect. He’s the Z this game, he’s the X playing and there could be a handful of him playing the F for us. So that’s just an honor for him. But I think a lot of these kids are now finding that they’ve thrown the ball a lot more and developed a lot more concepts over the summer, obviously during their college and high school careers as well.
