Why does this Walmart employee doubt the oven story?

In a now-viral TikTok, a Walmart employee expressed confusion over the tragic death of a 19-year-old co-worker who died in one of the store’s walk-in ovens.

User @chrisbreezie559 posted the video to her TikTok earlier this week. “Regarding the Walmart employee who was boiled alive while on the clock,” she wrote in the text overlay. In her video, @chrisbreezie559 showed viewers how difficult it would be for an employee to accidentally lock themselves in the store’s ovens.

“There’s no way anyone could lock themselves in there,” said @chrisbreezie559. As of Thursday, her video had been viewed more than 27.4 million times.

What happened to the Walmart employee?

According to the Daily mailone of several outlets reporting on the tragedy, employee Gursimran Kaur became trapped in the store’s oven. She worked at a Walmart location in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Kaur’s “charred remains” were apparently found by her mother, another employee at the same Walmart location. The Daily mail reported that Kaur’s mother searched for her in the workplace for more than an hour before finally finding her body.

“The mother is devastated. She is in psychological pain,” Balbir Singh, secretary of the Maritime Sikh Society, told CTV News. “She definitely needs help and support.”

According to recent reporting on the case, Kaur’s remains have not yet been released by the medical examiner’s office. Officials have also not formally released details about her cause of death and an investigation is ongoing.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Oct. 23, a Walmart spokesperson said employees were “heartbroken” and the store was closed “until further notice.”

“Our deepest thoughts are with our employee and their family,” the spokesperson said. “Our focus remains on looking after our employees and ensuring they have the support they need. As the police have stated, this is a very complex case and the investigation is ongoing.”

Walmart employees doubt shocking story

In her video, @chrisbreezie559 showed viewers what the store’s oven looks like. She explained that the oven is turned on from outside and you have to “pull it really hard” to open the oven.

After opening the oven, she showed viewers the inside of it.

“The oven is very hot right now,” said @chrisbreezie559. “I don’t even know if I would fit in here, to be honest.”

The employee clarified that she is 6 feet tall and has a medium build

“I had to duck to get in,” she added.

However, it is possible that someone could get stuck there and not be able to get help. @chrisbreezie559 said that even though there is no emergency latch on the oven, she “would never be here.”

“Whether I’m cleaning it or not, I wouldn’t be in the oven,” she said. And to lock the oven, a worker would have to push “with all his might” on the outer handles.

“There’s no way anyone could lock themselves in there,” she said. “Now someone could throw me in there and lock me up there, but that’s a completely different scenario.”

@chrisbreezie559 isn’t the first Walmart employee to cast doubt on what happened. According to the Daily mailsaid another worker named Mary that the story “doesn’t make sense.”

“I’m not trying to theorize or conspire, it’s just hard to wrap my head around it when Walmart’s bakery ovens are so safe to use,” she said.

Viewers respond

In the comments on @chrisbreezie559’s video, some viewers expressed a healthy dose of skepticism about Kaur’s tragic death. Some users, including @chrisbreezie559, even suggested she was murdered.

“I call foul play! No wonder she was there alone,” one man wrote.

“There was something wrong with that story,” another added.

“I work in a bakery and I immediately thought, ‘that girl was murdered because that’s not possible,’” a third person added. To this comment, @chrisbreezie559 replied: “I agree.”

However, others wondered how Walmart could let this happen. However Kaur died, people wondered why there were no cameras present and how colleagues could let this go unnoticed.

“Walmart has a million cameras, brother, are you telling me it wasn’t caught on camera?” one viewer asked.

“There are cameras EVERYWHERE in Walmart,” said another. “How does no one know how this happened???”

“It’s a glass window,” a third viewer commented. “How could no one see her?!”
