Why Ian Harding only makes Christmas decorations on December 23 – and is anti-light

Ian Harding is the star of not one but two holiday projects this season, but when it comes to celebrating at home, he’s not shy about decorating.

“I’m not really into outdoor lighting,” Harding, 38, said exclusively We weekly while promoting his Hallmark+ series, Heldand that of Netflix Our little secret.

The actor explained that the possibility of outdoor lighting leading to an “electrical fire problem” is a factor in his opposition to the tradition. “At least that’s the paranoid part of me,” Harding said, laughing.

“But (I’m) big on indoor wreaths and bells. I like that,” he said of his decorating style, noting that it “drives our dogs crazy.” Harding and his wife, Sophie Harthave two dogs, Mochi and Bailey. They also have a son, whom they welcomed in 2022.

Despite being an indoor Christmas fan, Harding confessed that his decorations “usually come out around the 23rd” of December. “We have so much to do that we think, ‘Oh my God! Christmas is next week. Oh, okay,” he teased. “And then we start decorating.”

The interior design of Harding’s vacation home isn’t the only thing he’s still trying to perfect. The Pretty little liars alum told Us that he hasn’t decided yet which Christmas classics to show his son after watching some strange classics as a kid.

“I don’t know what this says about our family. We loved a good, rich drama on Christmas Eve,” he laughed. “And so we watched the movie with my family for years Christmas Carol of George C Scottwhich is so hard and in some cases really scary.”

Harding teased, “I don’t know what my dad was thinking” as he put on the 1984 version of the iconic film. “He said, ‘It’s good, it’ll enrich your soul or whatever,’” he recalled, noting, “There were parts of it (that were).”

Other parts, however, haunted him. “I knew when we got to the point where the man opens his coat, and there are the two malnourished little children. I mean, I didn’t sleep that night,” Harding admitted. “And not because I was waiting for Santa.”

The actor explained this after watching A Christmas carol Once, while talking to his wife, they realized they didn’t want to continue that tradition. “We haven’t really gotten back to that yet,” he said.

Harding thinks about watching 1992 The Muppets Christmas Carol instead of. “Now that I have a kid, let’s do the Muppets instead of a heavy English period drama,” he said Us.

Although Harding is used to a darker take on the holidays, he recalled watching Hallmark movies as well. “It’s funny that we’ve come full circle now,” he said, referring to his role on Hallmark+’s Held.

Harding plays Josh Hill in the holiday series, the first two episodes of which were released on November 14. New episodes appear every Thursday.

“It’s basically set on a cul-de-sac (with) a number of different families,” Harding said Us of the starting point. “And they’re kind of these interlocking stories, and everyone is dealing with Christmas and both the highs and the lows that come with the holidays.”

He teased, “My character, I came back to see my family. It was supposed to be a quick trip of sorts, and I have no ulterior motive, but there’s more than one reason why I’m coming back.

Harding added: “Then through some trickery, maybe even my own incompetence, I end up having to stay for various, dare I say, legal reasons. Hilarity and potential romance ensue.”

In the film, which premiered on Wednesday, November 27, Harding plays Logan, who pretends not to know Lohan’s Avery despite having been dating for years. When the exes are forced together for Christmas while dating siblings, they become each other’s allies.

“I think they just get each other. Even years later, like little details that are in the scripts, (show that connection),” Harding said of their character dynamic. “They have to cut down a Christmas tree together. And all he remembers is the coffee thing (she loves it).”

He explained that Avery “never thinks she’ll be cold, and yet she’s always cold,” so Logan takes a jacket to the tree lot.

“I think he just knows her and maybe she doesn’t want to admit it, but she knows him,” Harding teased, hinting that they are “destined” to catch feelings again, but adding that fans “will have to tune in ” to see if they actually rekindle their romance.
