Does it feel like the wait between Halloween and Thanksgiving has been longer than usual?

It’s not just what you feel, Thanksgiving is late this year – very late. But it will be worth it when you eat that turkey leg and devour the stuffing and green bean casserole.

Here’s what you need to know about the timing of Thanksgiving

When is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 28.

Why is Thanksgiving so late this year?

The delay started on February 29, when we squeezed that extra day into the calendar. The combination of Leap Year and Halloween on Thursday aligned the dates so that Thanksgiving would fall on the last possible day, November 28. This will not happen again until 2030.

The earliest Halloween can fall is November 22. The next time we have an early Thanksgiving is November 22, 2029. Therefore, we will have the earliest Thanksgiving in 2029, followed by the latest Thanksgiving in 2030.

Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, the national holiday began as a celebration of the harvest and other blessings. However, Thanksgiving has since moved away from its Puritan roots and become a day that “symbolizes cross-cultural peace, America’s opportunity for newcomers, and the sanctity of home and family.”

What is the history of Thanksgiving?

The folklore of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the Pilgrims celebrated a harvest festival with the Wampanoag people in Plymouth, Massachusetts. According to History.com, the Pilgrims had a bountiful corn harvest and celebrated with their Native American allies. The celebration lasted three days.

During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more Thanksgiving days per year. In 1798, George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the United States national government; in it he called on Americans to express their gratitude for the happy outcome of the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the US Constitution.

However, there was not an official Thanksgiving day in the United States until 1863. At the height of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln established an official Thanksgiving day on the last Thursday in November to ask God to heal the nation’s wounds.
