Why People Are Obsessed With the Viral TikTok Cucumber Trend

If you’re on TikTok, you’ve probably noticed that you’ve become obsessed with cucumbers lately.

As New York comedienne Meg Ruocco joked, “Somehow my For You page has become 10% Chappell Roan, 10% that guy with the horse, and 80% that guy who eats a cucumber every day.”

That “cucumber guy” would be Logan Moffitt, a 23-year-old content creator from Ottawa, Canada, who has taken social media by storm this summer with his dozens of cucumber recipes on TikTok. Moffitt estimates he eats two to three cucumbers a day, but “somehow I still haven’t gotten sick of cucumbers,” he told HuffPost. “So more cucumber videos coming.”

“Anytime I get an idea, I just type it into my little notes app,” he said. Moffitt said he’s constantly thinking about how to transform regular menu items into cucumber salads. “I just saw someone make jalapeño poppers on my TikTok. And I was like, ‘That would be so good in a cucumber salad.’” And it was.

So far, Moffitt has created popular cucumber salads that are based on California sushi rolls, flavored with tzatziki, incorporate peanut butter and chili crunch, or are inspired by Din Tai Fung, a Michelin-starred Taiwanese dim sum chain.

Before becoming known for his cucumber TikToks, Moffitt was also known for documenting his love of cooking and eating Korean food, for which fans have hailed him as an “honorary Korean” and “the epitome of cultural appreciation.”

Unlike other white culinary creators who have been criticized for appropriating Asian recipes without acknowledging their origins, Moffitt gives credit where credit is due.

He said he is inspired by the recipes of South Korean-born chef Maangchi, whom he calls his cooking teacher. “I grew up watching her. Absolutely, definitely, she’s a huge inspiration,” Moffitt said.

Why Everyone Is Obsessed With Cucumbers Prepared in a Deli Tray

But despite his endless variations on what a salad can be, Moffitt’s star ingredient remains an English, or greenhouse, cucumber. It’s a vegetable that most people can easily find in their grocery store, which Moffitt says is part of the reason his videos are so popular.

“Cucumbers are really accessible, cheap and healthy,” he said. “I’m just glad it’s a food trend that a lot of people can get into.”

Refreshing cucumber salads have long been a staple of warm dishes, but what makes Moffitt’s cucumber recipes so fun to watch is the way he stuffs all the salad ingredients to the brim of a gallon-sized freezer container and then shakes them together without any leaks.

As one shocked commenter on his video puts it: “I swear your container is pocket sized because HOW can you fill it that full and still shake it until it’s mixed?!”

Moffitt said people can use a bowl to toss the salad, but he prefers a deli-style container because “those deli-style containers don’t leak. They seal really well, especially when they’re new, the seal is really good,” he said.

Moffitt knows his cucumber moment might not last into the cold season. “I’ve been on TikTok for almost four years now, so I’ve seen a lot of food trends come and go, and they don’t usually last forever. So I just try to appreciate it while it’s here,” he said.

But for now, Moffitt is embracing being known as the cucumber man. “If I get called cucumber man, cucumber boy, whatever, I think that’s a fun nickname, so I don’t mind,” he said. His TikTok bio now reads, “Join the cucumber community.”

The Cucumber Guy’s Favorite Cucumber Recipe

Moffitt said he doesn’t use formal measurements with his cucumber recipes. “I just measure by heart,” he said.

Below is a step-by-step guide to his favorite cucumber recipe, which features smoked salmon with everything bagel seasoning and has been viewed over 28 million times. You can use the recipe as a starting point for your own recipe.

  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 tablespoon whipped cream cheese
  • 1 portion smoked salmon
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced (use only a little, to taste)
  • 1 half avocado
  • Some capers
  • A little bit of MSG seasoning
  • A little bit of everything bagel seasoning

Steps
1. Slice a whole cucumber with a mandolin over the container. Slice smoked salmon with a knife and add to the container. Slice “some” red onion with the mandolin and add that with the avocado, according to Moffitt’s video.
2. Sprinkle with a pinch of capers, then a pinch of salt, pepper, and “some MSG, of course,” as Moffitt puts it, and bagel seasoning to taste.
3. Close the lid of your deli container tightly and shake the container vigorously. The ingredients should be mixed by shaking for up to “two minutes,” Moffitt said.
4. Enjoy. Try eating with chopsticks, like Moffitt does in his videos.

Tips: If you don’t have a large deli container, use a bowl, Moffitt suggests. And if you can, use whipped cream cheese, because “it definitely helps with the shaking.”
