    Why Your iPhone May Be in SOS Mode

    Some customers are reporting that there was an outage with AT&T on Tuesday. Some say their phones have been in SOS mode for hours and can’t connect.

    Reports of possible AT&T service outages began surging on the Downdetector website just after 4 p.m. ET. By 6:46 p.m. ET, the number had reached 5,800, and reports continued to roll in Tuesday evening.

    “We are working as quickly as possible to resolve a software issue that may be disrupting the ability of some of our customers to connect to our wireless network,” an AT&T spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Keeping our customers connected is our top priority, so we appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this issue.”

    The problem appears to be primarily affecting wireless customers in the Midwest and East, the spokesperson said.

    What does SOS mode on your phone mean?

    For AT&T customers who may experience an outage on Tuesday, an SOS icon may appear on iPhone users’ screens in the same place where cellular service bars normally appear.

    USA TODAY previously reported that the SOS icon may appear in the status bar of iPhones and iPads, indicating that the devices are not connected to a cellular network. It also means that a cellular network “is available for emergency calling,” according to Apple’s support website.

    The SOS feature is available on iPhones and iPads in the US, Australia, and Canada.

    “When you call SOS, your iPhone automatically dials your local emergency number and shares your location information with emergency services,” Apple said. “In some countries and regions, you may need to choose the service you need.”

    After you make an emergency call, your iPhone will alert the emergency contacts set up in your phone.

    According to Apple, all iPhone models from 14 onwards will also be able to send SOS emergency notifications to emergency services via satellite when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage available.
