Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge closes due to smoke impacts

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will be closed on Saturday, October 26 in response to smoke impacts from the Rush Fire.

According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services officials, all public areas are closed and refuge entrances are closed.

The statement from officials also says there are road closures, including Highway 115 at the Cache and Meers Gates, on Highway 49 at the West Gate northwest of Charon’s Garden Wilderness Area and at the entrance to Medicine Park Refuge. Indiahoma Road is also closed south of Charon’s Garden Wilderness Area.

Officials are reminding everyone not to go around roadblocks for their safety. They are also asking everyone to listen to law enforcement as crews work to battle the fire.
