Wildfires in Rockaway Township are now 90% contained; 77 hectares affected

A wildfire in Morris County that has burned 77 acres of land is now 90% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Officials say crews remain at the scene of the fire near Jacobs Road in Rockaway Township. They say there have been no evacuations and no structures are at risk.

Jacobs Road remains closed as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.

The fire brigade has been fighting the fire since Saturday. Officials say because New Jersey hasn’t seen rain in 23 days, the soil has no moisture.

“Probably 6 inches down, completely dry. So that puts the fire in the ground, which makes it a lot more difficult for us,” fire official Todd Sacchiero said earlier Tuesday morning.

Falling leaves contribute to the dry fuels. Officials say winds will become an issue as they are expected to increase Wednesday through Thursday.

No injuries have been reported.
