Day said Troy Vincent – ​​​​a former Wisconsin cornerback who is now executive vice president of football operations for the NFL – recently met with Big Ten coaches in California.

Explaining how the new kick-off would work, Vincent said the data would be examined at the end of the season to see its impact.

“I haven’t looked at it much,” Day said. “I haven’t seen a lot of NFL football. I’ve got my hands full here, but I’ve looked at a few in passing. It’s at least interesting in terms of the schedules and what exactly is going on.”

The NFL calls its new style the “dynamic kickoff.”

The kicking team lines up on the opponent’s 40-yard line, while the receiving team lines up between its 30 and 35 line. Neither side, other than the kicker and the returning player, can move until the ball is played.

If the ball lands between the 20-yard line and the end zone – known as the ‘landing zone’ – it must be returned.

A punt that goes into the end zone can be returned or downed for a touchback, which will land the ball on the receiving team’s 30-yard line.
