Will it snow in Louisville on Thursday? What we know about Kentucky weather forecasts

The National Weather Service stated in a Thursday morning update that Louisville will see some snow throughout the day as precipitation arrives in two waves. The agency has also issued a winter weather advisory for locals with temperatures around freezing and wind gusts of up to 55 km/h.

Here’s what we know about the prediction.

The first snow of the season hits Louisville

The Louisville NWS predicts precipitation will fall in two waves throughout Thursday, with the first bringing cold air from north to south. With little moisture to work with, locals shouldn’t expect more than “a few festive flakes.”

The second wave will hit in the late afternoon or early evening, “in time for the evening commute,” the NWS said, and a winter weather advisory has been issued along the Interstate 75 corridor and other counties to the west. Strong winds can also obscure the view of the road.

NWS meteorologist Evan Webb previously said winds could reach up to 55 mph on Thursday and, combined with snow, could pose a problem for motorists.

“Anytime you combine wind and snow, the snow can blow around and reduce visibility even further,” Webb said. “That could be a problem at times, just poor visibility and falling snow and quite gusty winds that we’re going to have.”

Although temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for most of the day, they will drop to slightly below freezing at night. Some snow accumulation may occur “depending on how quickly the snow falls,” with most areas seeing up to an inch, and some seeing close to an inch. After midnight, snow will decrease as the system moves east.
