Will Nets’ Cam Thomas change the hearts and minds of his doubters?

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has played well this season as he learns how to become a more efficient scorer under new head coach Jordi Fernandez. While there are some who believe Thomas doesn’t really have a ceiling due to his skills, one of his most notable doubters appears to be changing his tune on Thomas.

“I went to Celts-Nets. It’s been brewing for two weeks, but I’m officially admitting to a preseason loss. Cam Thomas, good stats/bad team shooting/jokes,” said Bill Simmons, the founder of The Ringer, on his X account after Friday’s game. 108-104 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics. Like some people who observe the NBA, Simmons has been one of the loudest people saying Thomas is nothing more than a no-impact scorer.

“Was impressed with his shooting ability and competitiveness,” continued Simmons. “He didn’t play selfishly. He held his own against elite defenders. A legitimate asset.” With the Celtics on Friday, Thomas dropped 31 points, including 11-for-22 shooting from the field and 4-for-9 from three-point land. Thomas’ impact didn’t stop at jump shots, as he also drove to the rim to generate seven free throws, making five of them.

One of the key differences for Thomas this season will be how he gets his points as the main offensive option for a Nets team that has surprised a lot of people with its 4-5 record. Thomas, 23, is averaging 25.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 43.3% from the field and 32.4% from deep.

“He (Thomas) has to use his superpowers to score, and do it efficiently. The potential assists have to go up. If he gets eight plus potential assists, we have won every game and that’s what we keep telling him. When we give you the ball in the second side, explore. Less dribbling, more passing. If you have it, shoot with all your might. But if not, you are very good at sharing the ball, then having it we all benefit from it,” said Fernandez Thomas after Monday’s 106-104 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
