Will the comet be visible tonight? How to watch

play

If you haven’t gone out and looked at the sky at night for the past week (or really all of 2024), you’re missing a whole show.

First, there were the Northern Lights that danced and burst a palette of colors across the night sky, wowing sky watchers. And now it’s the comet you only encounter once in a lifetime.

The comet first entered our orbit on October 12 when it was closest to Earth at about 70 million kilometers. Since then, observers, mainly in Wisconsin, have spotted comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS every night.

How long will the comet be visible? Here’s what you need to know about the comet, which will soon disappear in 80,000 years.

Can I see the comet tonight?

The comet was at its peak earlier this week, but is now becoming harder to see. The comet was as bright as the North Star until October 16. And as it moves further from Earth, its brightness decreases, but it could still be visible to the naked eye until October 26, Space.com predicted.

The comet will disappear completely from view in early November.

Is the comet visible with the naked eye?

Earlier this week, the comet was visible to the naked eye and you could capture it with your iPhone. But now you’ll probably need binoculars or a telescope to see the comet dim.

As with the Northern Lights, the darker the spot without much light pollution is the best for viewing.

The Hunter’s Moon will affect the comet’s visibility

Thursday’s full Hunter’s Moon didn’t help the comet’s viewing experience, as it is the brightest full “supermoon” of the year, according to Space.com.

But since the moon rises later Friday and Sunday, viewers will have a better chance of seeing the comet even as it fades.
