Will The Penguin get a season 2 on HBO?

The release of is Sunday evening The penguin episode 8 and thus the conclusion of the first season of The Batman spin-off, but is that the end of the story? Since before The penguin series premiered, it’s being talked about as if it were a limited series, a connecting event The Batman to the next one The Batman Part II. To date, nothing has been said about this The penguin goes beyond HBO’s original episode order, but the show’s popularity has only skyrocketed since its premiere. Could that lead to a renewal order?

The short answer, as of this writing, is NoIt do not that season 2 of The penguin will happen. However, such plans sometimes change The Batman director Matt Reeves has already hinted at the TV future of this corner of DC. There are two main reasons why a season 2 of The penguin seems unlikely, the biggest of which is that the show acts as a bridge between the two The Batman And The Batman Part II probably doesn’t need another batch of episodes before that movie (not to mention the timing wouldn’t really work). Reeves himself has already confirmed that series star Colin Farrell will return in the sequel, thus his position in the world of The Batman will become clear as the series ends and we head towards the feature film sequel.

The second important reason for that The penguin Season 2 seems unlikely, is Farrell, who has made it clear that doing another set of episodes isn’t really something he’s keen to repeat. Farrell was asked about the possibilities of a renewal in an interview with Total Film earlier this year and replied: “I don’t know, man. Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got to me a little. By the end of it I was whining and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I wanted it to be over. I tried to remind them that I felt ‘grumpy gratitude’.”

He added: ‘I was still grateful and still honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith (in the ’60s Batman TV series), and then Danny DeVito (in 1992 Batman returns) was my Penguin – so being part of the lineage of those stories made me feel really privileged. But towards the end…”

Series showrunner Lauren LeFranc offered a slightly more hopeful look at The Penguin’s potential as an ongoing series, telling The Direct: “We put it all on the table. I think if we want to do a second season, we have to feel like we can outdo ourselves. We need to feel like there is something more that we can really delve into. I mean, I really care about all these characters, even though they’re horrible people.”

As for the television future of The Batman and its characters, Matt Reeves recently spoke about where they might go, seemingly referencing the TV shows that focus on individual characters between films (and also that they are one-off stories). Speak with InterviewReeves said: “We’ve talked about doing other shows… You can have that experience of this almost novelistic epic crime saga, but you also just get these separate experiences. They have their own dramatic value. So the story of Oz is the story of Oz, and the idea is to do these other stories in the same way.

One element of this whole puzzle that may have some fans wondering, and that seems a bit telling, is how The penguin is present on the MAX streaming service. When viewers select The penguin and get the episodes you can watch, they’re all listed as “S1E1,” “S1E2,” etc., which is in stark contrast to HBO’s other limited series on the service that label their episodes as “Episode 1,” “” Episode 2′, etc. This may have been done to leave some wiggle room as to whether The penguin will be renewed for season 2 or not, but in the grand scheme of the series this is mostly circumstantial evidence rather than direct evidence or confirmation about The penguin‘s future.
