Winter storm in Nevada with high winds, snow and possible power outages

The ski area Mt. Rose is closed due to the wind and NV Energy has shut off power to hundreds of homes

This story has been updated to include an additional ski area closed due to wind.

The winds blowing in Reno on Friday are only expected to get worse throughout the day as the first of two storms hits Northern Nevada.

The Mount Rose Ski Tahoe resort is closed due to the wind, while Palisades Tahoe is in the wind and power is out to hundreds of homes.

Peak winds in wind-prone areas will be near 60 to 70 mph, the National Weather Service predicts. It reports that winds over the Sierra ridge have already reached 100 to 115 mph on Friday.

The strongest winds are expected to hit just in time for the evening drive, starting at 5 p.m. and lasting until about 10 p.m., said Gigi Giralte of Reno’s National Weather Service office.

That’s also when up to half an inch of rain is expected to begin and about two feet of snow will fall in the mountains.

“It’s because of the atmospheric river we have right now,” she said.

“Obviously it hit the Pacific Northwest, and then turned down a little bit. That’s why we’re getting all these winds today before the precipitation.”

The forecast discussion says bumpy flight conditions, difficult or restricted travel for high-profile vehicles and choppy lake waters are expected through much of Friday.

The Mt Rose ski area is closed on Friday due to wind

Mt Rose Ski Tahoe said it would not open Friday due to high winds. Wind gusts of more than 55 miles per hour are reported at the resort ahead of the approaching winter storm.

Planned power outages by NV Energie

NV Energy reported just over 700 customers without power Friday morning as winds continue to blow through the region.

The power company cut power to thousands of people earlier this week when wind gusts reached up to 50 miles per hour.

On Thursday, the energy company said areas in Genoa were likely to come under Public Safety Outage Management surveillance due to the wind. Other areas were not immediately mentioned.

The majority of those without power Friday morning were in south Reno in the 89511 zip code.

New storm on Sunday

Giralte said this storm will last through Saturday, with another storm on its heels.

“There will also be another round of precipitation from Sunday to Tuesday,” she said.

The second storm is expected to be colder, with the Sierra ridge receiving an additional 1 to 6 feet of snow. There may be light dusting in Reno Wednesday morning.

Thanksgiving should be clear weather.
