Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke injured on first drive against Alabama

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was taken to the locker room after he was injured during the opening stage against No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.

Van Dyke was holding his right knee after injuring himself on a third-down scramble. He was taken to the injury tent on the sideline and then put in the cart. The Miami transfer had his head in his hands as the cart headed toward the locker room.

At halftime, Wisconsin announced that Van Dyke would be out for the remainder of the game. Van Dyke walked on the Wisconsin sideline with crutches at the start of the second half.

Braedyn Locke, who started three games last season in place of the injured Tanner Mordecai, took over for Van Dyke.

Van Dyke had transferred to Wisconsin after a patchy career at Miami. Van Dyke was named Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year in 2021, but he threw 12 interceptions last season while battling multiple injuries.

He won a pre-season competition with Locke for Wisconsin’s starting job. Van Dyke completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 406 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in his first two games as he led the Badgers to a 28-14 victory about West Michigan and a 27-13 triumph above South Dakota.

Van Dyke had completed his first five passes for 16 yards against Alabama before being injured.
