ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 7 University of Michigan hockey team forced overtime with a corner tip late in the fourth quarter, but fell 2-1 to No. 1 Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 25) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

The Wildcats, who clinched a share of the Big Ten Conference regular-season title with the victory, scored the winning goal at 64:30 on a rebound from the left post. Northwestern’s Maddie Zimmer carried the ball from the right baseline into the circle and advanced it. Sophomore/freshman Hello Silverstein made the first stop, but the rebound went left to Lauren Wadas, who blasted the ball in behind Silverston.

Senior/junior Emmy Trans scored the tying goal late in the fourth quarter, at 54:40, from a Michigan penalty corner. Graduate student Kate McLaughlin inserted directly into senior/junior Abby Tamer on the left side of the arch. Tamer hit a hard shot to the ground and Tran wanted to tip big for her second career goal – and first since 2021.

The match remained scoreless until halftime. The Wolverines (11-3, 4-2 Big Ten) controlled large portions of the game, including most of the first and fourth quarters. The teams combined for just six shots in the first half before Northwestern broke the tie on a corner of its own early in the third quarter, at the 35:24 mark. Zimmer fired a strike from the top of the arc, and Chloe Relford tapped it in from the right post.

Northwestern (16-0, 6-0 Big Ten) narrowly led in both shots at 11-10 and corners at 7-6.

Silverstein was spectacular inside the Wolverine cage with six total saves, including a breakaway stop in the waning seconds of the first half and two from the Northwestern corner kicks, tying the score late in the fourth quarter. NU goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz stopped seven of eight UM shots on goal.

Michigan concludes the home portion of the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 27) when it hosts Indiana at Ocker Field at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on B1G+ and admission is free.
