Here’s a recent soccer story from the AP:

LONDON (AP) — Erling Haaland has scored 91 goals in 100 games for Manchester City.

The striker marked his 100th appearance for the club on Sunday by scoring the first goal in a 2-0 win over Chelsea to begin City’s campaign for a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

That took his tally to five goals in three league openers since joining City in 2022 and showed the Norwegian is fully rested after a summer without international football.

“I had the feeling that he is better at the moment than last season,” said City manager Pep Guardiola. “He is feeling good and the goal was great.”

Haaland put his team ahead in the 18th minute and Mateo Kovacic scored again in the 84th minute from just outside the penalty area. New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had a tough time in his first game in charge.

Brentford also won 2-1 against Crystal Palace on Sunday after taking advantage of a controversial refereeing decision in the first half.

At Stamford Bridge, Haaland scored his opening goal when he received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and cut between Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella before tapping the ball past Robert Sanchez.

“I knew exactly what I had to do, I think it was a very good goal,” Haaland said.

It was the kind of clinical striker play that Chelsea lacked for much of last season and that was again the case on Sunday, despite a summer of big spending.

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson had a goal disallowed just before half-time for unnecessary offside. In the 61st minute, he fired a close-range shot straight at City goalkeeper Ederson, before being replaced by 18-year-old newcomer Marc Guiu.

“The performance was there, but we didn’t take the risks,” Maresca said. “Probably the big difference was in the box.”

Still, there were signs of encouragement for Maresca, the former Man City assistant under Pep Guardiola. While none of Chelsea’s nine summer signings started, Romeo Lavia made his first league start after missing most of last season through injury and impressed in a midfield partnership with Moises Caicedo.

Winger Pedro Neto came on as a substitute in the 59th minute to make his debut after an expensive transfer from Wolves and scored almost immediately after coming close to a low cross from Enzo Fernandez towards the far post.

But Kovacic, replacing the injured Rodri, doubled the lead against his old club when he intercepted a high ball and fired forward, only for the ball to hit the post and into the net.

Brentford win without Toney

Brentford did not need Ivan Toney to start the season with a win and may well have to do without the England striker in the future.

Toney was left out of the squad due to what Brentford manager Thomas Frank described as “transfer interest” in the forward, but Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored for the home side.

“I think Wissa has stepped up every time Ivan hasn’t played and I think he’s done that again today,” Frank said. “Bryan started last season fantastically and is back on top of things now.”

Wissa scored the winning goal in the 76th minute after Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson managed to keep Nathan Collins’ blocked shot with his hands but managed to deflect the ball onto the Brentford striker’s legs.

Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 29th minute, with Palace then equalising through an own goal from Ethan Pinnock.

However, Palace were disappointed as Mbeumo’s goal came just minutes after the visitors had a goal disallowed at the other end.

Eberechi Eze surprised Brentford keeper Mark Flekken with a long-range free-kick from the right, firing straight into the net at the near post as Brentford anticipated a cross into the box. However, referee Sam Barrott blew his whistle for a foul on Palace midfielder Will Hughes as he jostled for position in a scrum of players on the edge of the box. Although the decision infuriated Palace manager Oliver Glasner, VAR could not review it as Barrott blew his whistle before the ball had entered the net.

“I was told he blew the whistle too early and made the mistake,” Glasner said. “I think everyone was surprised the referee blew the whistle so early. We thought it was a goal, but the rules are that if the referee blows the whistle, the goal doesn’t count. It is what it is.”
