World Series news: Ticket prices drop along with the Yankees’ odds

The first two games of the World Series were filled with drama. Only with the last pitch was the outcome certain.

Freddie Freeman closed Game 1 on Friday with the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. The New York Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth inning of Game 2 before the Dodgers slammed the door shut and took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Yankees appeared to be no worse than competitive when the series moved to New York for Game 3 on Monday. But a near-total shutdown by the Dodgers’ pitching staff produced a 4-2 victory that pushed the Yankees’ season to the brink.

With Game 4 scheduled for Tuesday night and the Yankees’ chances of coming back reduced to a prayer, ticket prices are dropping accordingly.

Los Angeles will be in the World Series for the fourth time in the past eight seasons, but this will be their first appearance since their championship win in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.

New York hasn’t been to (or won) a World Series since 2009. Clearly, Yankee fans are not in the mood to enjoy the atmosphere of a potential season-ending loss. With few exceptions, the first three games have given Yankee fans hope for a turnaround in fortunes.

So far in the series, the Yankees are hitting .200 (4-for-20) with runners in scoring position. The Dodgers are batting .158 (3-for-19), but have eight RBIs to the Yankees’ four – Freeman’s grand slam accounts for the entire difference.

The Yankees will give the ball to rookie Luis Gil in Game 4, while the Dodgers are expected to counter with a bullpen game. Their starting pitcher has not yet been announced.

With the lack of a major pitching matchup and the Yankees’ uninspiring performance so far in the series, ticket demand is following a predictable path.
