Xavier Newman injury update: NBC broadcast provides positive news on a scary situation

New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Nieuwman was injured during a Sunday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, put on a backboard and taken off the field.

The NBC broadcast crew provided a brief update after Newman was taken away.

“We have a quick update on Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman,” NBC sideline reporter said Melissa Stark said. “He left for the hospital. The ambulance is on its way. But we can tell you there is movement in his limbs. He squeezed the hands of the athletics staff, so that’s a great sign.”

The television cameras showed video of Xavier Newman leaving the field through one of the end zone exits after driving down the sideline. Players from both teams had gathered around Newman before he was led away.

Newman was injured on an interception.

After quarterback Aaron Rodgers was picked off, Newman flocked to the play. He was shot by Pittsburgh linebacker Patrick Queenwith the two batting helmets near the sideline.

Newman immediately hit the turf and didn’t move for several moments as trainers quickly ran out to tend to him.

Within minutes, the trainers had removed his face mask so they could better care for him. Yet there was initially no movement, creating a very frightening scene for players and coaches alike.

Finally, Xavier Newman was loaded onto a backboard, placed on a stretcher and then loaded into a cart, where he was taken off the field.

Newman is in his fourth year in the NFL and arrives via Baylor. He spent his first two seasons with the Tennessee Titans and played his last two seasons with the New York Jets.
