Two New York Yankees fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts as he attempted to make a catch were barred from the fifth game of the World Series on Wednesday.

The Yankees announced hours before the pivotal clash in New York that spectators lined up along the wall in foul territory in right field were ejected after attempting to block the player and knocking the ball out of his glove to grab.

The incident occurred in the first inning of New York’s 11-4 victory that brought the Yankees to within 3-1 in Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven championship game.

“Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for blatant and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts,” the Yankees said in a statement.

“The safety and security of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of any event held at Yankee Stadium and should not be compromised.

“Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion to be visible.

“Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting a team can never cross the line and intentionally put players in physical danger.

“The Yankees and Major League Baseball have a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight’s game in any capacity.”

Betts tried to grab a ball hit by New York’s Gleyber Torres, but as he jumped over the wall in foul territory, one fan grabbed his right hand and the other pulled the ball from his glove.

Torres was called out for fan interference during the game.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Dodgers starting pitcher Ben Casparius said.

“From my perspective, that looked ridiculous,” Dodgers shortstop Tommy Edman said. “The man tried to take off his glove and pulled his wrist. It looked like he was sent away and I’m glad he did.

“I’ve never seen anything like that. That was unacceptable.”
