Yankees lose Ian Hamilton for remainder of postseason after calf injury

CLEVELAND – The Yankees have lost Ian Hamilton for the remainder of the playoffs, with Mark Leiter Jr. takes his spot on the ALCS roster on Friday.

Hamilton was cut from the Yankees’ roster after suffering a calf injury while covering first base during Thursday’s Game 3.

The reliever tried to throw a warm-up pitch and said he felt his calf grab him, then left the game with a trainer and was scheduled to undergo imaging Friday.

Because the Yankees replace him on the roster, Hamilton will not be eligible for the World Series if the Yankees get there.

Leiter had been left off the ALDS and ALCS rosters after working his way out of a trade from the Cubs at the deadline.

The right-hander pitched to a 4.98 ERA over 21 games with the Yankees, allowing six home runs in 21 ⅔ innings. He has the potential to swing and miss, but was hurt by the slug too many times.

The injury marks the end of a frustrating season for Hamilton, who also missed nearly three months during the regular season with a strained lat.
