Yankees-Royals benches free after Anthony Volpe and Maikel Garcia heated stock market

Tensions were high during Game 4 of the ALDS between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees. It got to the point where both teams’ benches cleared and met on the field.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees led the Royals 3-0, and New York shortstop Anthony Volpe poured salt into the wound as he tagged Kansas City third baseman Maikel Garcia at second.

Volpe tagged out Garcia when he slid, and again when Garcia got up. Garcia did not appreciate this emphasis on the out and looked at him. Volpe continued encouraging Garcia by patting him on the back as he walked away. This caused Garcia to talk back as Jazz Chisholm intervened. It’s unclear what was said, but it caused a heated argument between players from both teams.

This is when both benches enter the field. The bullpens even got in on the action. No physical altercations took place and the chaos quickly calmed down.

With so much at stake in this game, emotions ran high. This debacle gave the Royals the spark they needed when Bobby Witt Jr. came up next and singled. Vinny Pasquantino then doubled to bring home Witt and give the Royals their first score of the night.
