Yankees star ‘looks cooked’ in MLB playoffs, says New York host | ‘I’m worried’

The good news: The New York Yankees are one win away from reaching the AL Championship Series. The bad news: Aaron Judge has one hit in the AL Division Series, continuing a career-long trend.

The reality is that the Yankees have taken a 2-1 lead against the Kansas City Royals despite Judge, who is 1 of 11 with three walks and five strikeouts. It worries some, including WFAN’s Keith McPherson.

RESTORING THE GLORY

“This is Aaron Judge we’re talking about,” Keith McPherson said Thursday via Audacy. “This is a guy who I said this season is the best baseball player I’ve ever seen. I would hate to retract that statement. I’m not pulling it back, but he looks cooked. I’m worried.

“The Yankees aren’t going where they want to go without that guy.”

Judge’s struggles can be seen as an anomaly and/or a minor anomaly, but his postseason results show a trend line of subpar production. In 47 postseason games (212 plate appearances), Judge is hitting .203/.308/.440 (103 wRC+) with 13 home runs and 25 RBIs. He has a strikeout rate of 33.5% and a walk rate of 13.2%.

Such production would be disappointing for a much worse player, but for Judge it adds more surprise. He had a .322/.458/.701 line (218 OPS+) with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs this season, making him the favorite for the AL MVP award.

Judge’s teammates expect him to break out soon.

“He’s definitely going to do some damage,” dedicated hitter Giancarlo Stanton told reporters after the 3-2 win in Game 3. It’s only a matter of time. He’s had good at bats. It will come when we need him most.”

New York can move on with a Game 4 win on Thursday.
