Yankees vs. Guardians score, live updates: New York looks for 3-0 lead as series shifts to Cleveland for ALCS Game 3

The American League Championship Series continues in Cleveland with the New York Yankees leading 2-0 over the Cleveland Guardians after their big bats jumped the AL Central champions in the first two games in the Bronx. Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto both hit home runs in the 5-2 win in Game 1, then Aaron Judge went deep in the 6-3 win at New York in Game 2. The Yankees haven’t been to the World Series since 2009, and they are halfway to their 41st AL pennant in the 2024 ALCS.

With the series set in the Midwest, the Guardians have a chance to return to the series on home turf, where they have been good all year. At 50-30, Cleveland had the best regular-season home record in the American League. The Guardians also played two of the three games at Progressive Field in the ALDS against the Tigers.

The Yankees have starter Clarke Schmidt (0-0, 3.86 ERA, 4.2 IP, 4 K 1 BB in 2024 postseason) on the mound for his second start of the playoffs against Matthew Boyd, who has not allowed a run in his two postseason outings (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 6.2 IP 10, K 3 BB) for the Guardians.

Live8 updates

  • Schmidt escaped with a strikeout by José Ramírez and groundouts by Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas. Both teams got two baserunners in the first inning, but no runs.

  • Steven Kwan gets his own walk against Clarke Schmidt, followed by a bloop single from Kyle Manzardo. Guards have two on and none off to open the bottom of the first.

  • Boyd handled walks from Torres and Giancarlo Stanton for a scoreless first inning, then closed with a strikeout of Jazz Chisholm. That’s one pass through the mighty top of the Yankees lineup.

  • Aaron Judge came in today going 3-for-18 with six strikeouts this postseason, and he starts with a three-pitch strikeout. All swinging shots. Very good from Boyd.

  • Lane Thomas rescues the Guardians from a two-on-none-out situation to open the match with a great sliding catch as he battles the sun in midfield. Torres reached base with a walk.

  • Matthew Boyd fires a first pitch change to Gleyber Torres, and we’re off.

  • We’re about to get down to business in Cleveland as the Guardians try to dig their way out of a 2-0 hole.

  • Game 3 setups

Clarke Schmidt and Matthew Boyd are your starting pitchers.
