Zach Wilson calls for Broncos backup role in final half of season

Zach Wilson took full advantage of the Denver Broncos’ final practice game to show why he should be the team’s No. 2 quarterback this season.

Wilson, the former first-round pick of the Jets, finished the exhibition game between the Broncos and Arizona Cardinals by completing 16 of 25 passes for 251 yards and two touchdown passes in a 38-12 victory for Denver.

The former Jets starter has been in contention for the starting backup position since training camp began in Denver and impressed in Sunday’s final practice game of the season.

Wilson, who also scored a touchdown, even threw an impressive 46-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Johnson in the fourth quarter.

Jarrett Stidham played a brief stint in the game and the QB completed 2 of 4 pass attempts for 28 yards before Wilson came on the field late in the first quarter.

Rookie Bo Nix has already secured the starting position.

“Both guys looked good,” Broncos coach Sean Payton told reporters after the game. “We feel comfortable with all three of them.”

Payton added that he would like to keep all three quarterbacks.

Both former NFL quarterback Chase Daniels and analyst Dan Orlovsky indicated that Wilson should be a backup somewhere in the league this season.

“Zach Wilson is absolutely balling. He’s earned a #2 job somewhere,” Daniels wrote on X,

“Should be #2 in Denver,” Orlovsky wrote on social media.

Wilson ended up in Denver after continuing to struggle in New York after being selected second overall by the Jets in 2021.

The Jets traded Wilson to Denver in April and the QB appears to have found some solace in the Mile High City.

He has worked with Broncos quarterback coach Davis Webb, who previously served as the Giants’ backup to Daniel Jones.

“For someone who’s just starting out in coaching, I think he’s doing a phenomenal job,” Wilson told The Athletic. “He’s doing a great job of dominating his meeting rooms and going over every little thing. Obviously, I think the element of him having played the position before goes a long way. I really like that he’s played the position.”

The Broncos open the season on September 8 against the Seattle Seahawks.
