If you had even a glimmer of hope that a quarterback battle would take place with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it took just five minutes into this week’s exhibition game against the Detroit Lions for those hopes and dreams to be dashed.

Starting quarterback Russell Wilson played just one series against the Lions, leading the team to a touchdown before being replaced by Justin Fields.

If there was some sort of quarterback battle going on, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would have wanted to take a longer look at Wilson and compare him to Fields. But pulling him so soon only reinforces the fact that Wilson has been the starter since the day he signed and nothing he or Fields have done since has changed anything.

This must be a bitter pill for Fields to swallow. He’s made it clear since the Steelers traded him that he came to compete for the starting job. Was he misguided by Tomlin? Will the team have a role for him in the offense, and does Fields even want one?
