Anna Sawai and the cast of ‘Shogun’ led the Emmys — and the red carpet

FX’s wildly popular series “Shōgun” dominated the Emmys on Sunday night, winning 18 of 25 nominations and becoming the first non-English-language TV show to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

And on the red carpet outside LA’s Peacock Theater, the show’s cast and crew (and their partners) also pulled off some of the evening’s most striking fashion shows.

Chief among them was Anna Sawai (pictured above), who appeared in a stunning custom-made red Vera Wang gown and became the first person of Asian descent to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She paired her silk faille mermaid dress, which Wang’s eponymous brand described as having an “architectural” neckline, with jewels from Cartier, for which Sawai is now a brand ambassador.

The look was inspired by Sawai’s character, Lady Mariko, and was created by celebrity stylist Karla Welch. “We loved how modern they felt and somehow they felt Shogun,” Welch told Vogue ahead of the awards, referring to the actor’s Cartier ring, earrings and platinum and onyx bands. “The whole look was clean, modern, Princess.”

Veteran actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, meanwhile, looked dapper in a navy wool tuxedo with silk lapels by Dior Men. While less adventurous than some of the evening’s other menswear, his choice of a matching navy shirt and embroidered tie helped him put a fresh spin on a classic tailored look.

Elsewhere, Tadanobu Asano opted for more conventional (but no less handsome) black-tie attire. But it was his actress wife Kurumi Nakata who stunned on the red carpet in a kimono with gold detailing that wouldn’t look out of place in a historical Japanese painting.

Moeka Hoshi wore a Miu Miu chiffon dress.

In addition to the main cast, recurring actor Moeka Hoshi made a splash in a look by Miu Miu, the sister label of luxury giant Prada. Her embellished chiffon dress was brought to life with black feathers and crystal detailing.

Meanwhile, Yuko Miyamoto, who plays a teahouse madam, looked elegant in a beautifully embroidered one-shoulder dress with a Japanese print motif. And Yuka Kouri, whose character is a courtesan, dazzled in a long-sleeved dress that unzipped on one side to reveal a flash of torso.

The zipper on Yuka Kouri's dress gave the impression of a cutout.

And it wasn’t just the “Shogun” actors.

Couple Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the series creators who adapted James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name for the small screen, also got in on the action, wearing a dress and a classic Christopher John Rogers tuxedo, respectively.

With “Shogun” poised for more nominations this awards season — the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards are still to come — expect to see many of these names on the red carpet in the months ahead.
