    Oklahoma State Cowboys fall short to Utah Utes in Big 12 opener

    UPDATE: The Oklahoma State Cowboys fell short in a 22-19 loss to the Utah Utes on Saturday in Week 4 of the college football season.

    STILLWATER — Coach Mike Gundy and the 15th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys open up Big 12 play Saturday with the 10th-ranked Utah Utes visiting Boone Pickens Stadium.

    The Cowboys (3-0) enter conference play coming off a 45-10 win at Tulsa.

    The Utes (3-0) could be without starting quarterback Cam Rising, whose status is up in the air due to a hand injury. Isaac Wilson would like start if Rising is unable to go.

    Micah Bernard picked up the first down Utah needed to run out the clock and give the Utes a road win in their Big 12 debut.

    Bernard had 182 rushing yards on 25 carries for the Utes (4-0).

    The Cowboys (3-1) will face Kansas State on the road next Saturday.

    Alan Bowman and the Cowboys finally are in sync on offense, but it might be too late.

    The Cowboys go 69 yards in seven plays with Bowman connecting with Rashod Ownes for a touchdown and Brennan Presley for the 2-point conversion.

    The Utes killed 2:17 off the clock but have to punt after facing fourth-and-27 at their 16.

    After a great return from Gavin Freeman, the Cowboys zipped down the field — 58 yards in three plays, capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Alan Bowman to Brennan Presley.

    Bowman and Presley connected on a 2-point conversion to make 22-11.

    Isaac Wilson hit tight end Brant Kuithe with a 45-yard strike to break this wide open.

    The Utes lead 22-3 with 6:21 left after failing on the 2-point attempt.

    After a slew of three-and-outs, OSU went with a one-and-out as Alan Bowman threw his second interception of the day, this time to Elijah Davis.

    Utah takes over at the OSU 45-yard line.

    After a three-an-out from Utah, it’s Alan Bowman back at quarterback for the Cowboys.

    But it’s the same song, different verse.

    Another three-and-out.

    Everything is out of sync today.

    The Cowboys only have 156 yards of total offense.

    Isaac Wilson and the Utes burned five minutes off the clock on a 10-play, 44-yard drive that ended with another Cole Becker field goal.

    Utah extended its lead to 16-3 with a 44-yard field goal from Becker.

    The Utes converted another fourth-down try before the OSU defense held to force the field goal.

    Utah is 4 of 5 on fourth-down tries in the game.

    Half of OSU’s drives have been three-and-outs, adding another on what will likely be OSU’s final possession of the third quarter.

    The Cowboys gained 2 yards on an Ollie Gordon run but got nothing else before punting.

    Utah took a 13-3 lead with a 37-yard field goal by Cole Becker at the 2:39 mark of the third quarter. 

    Utah had just one first down on the drive, getting a 61-yard rush from Micah Bernard, who dodged one tackle in the backfield, then broke two more tackles to get into open field.

    OSU showed some life with Garret Rangel at quarterback, but stalled at midfield. Hudson Kaak punted to the Utah 11, where the Utes will take over with a 10-3 lead at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter.

    Rangel has completed 3 of 7 passes for 31 yards, just missing Talyn Shettron on a deep throw that would have gone for a long gain.

    Utah’s Cole Becker missed a 36-yard field goal to end a drive that moved deep into OSU territory thanks to a long run by QB Isaac Wilson.

    After he bailed out the Utes with a 46-yard run, the Cowboy defense stiffened and forced a field goal that was wide left.

    OSU made a quarterback change to start the half with Garret Rangel replacing Alan Bowman on the first possession of the third quarter.

    After a 7-yard rush by Ollie Gordon II, Rangel threw two incompletions and OSU punted again. Bowman was 8 of 22 for 89 yards in the first half.

    Oklahoma State backup quarterback Garret Rangel started the second half of a home game against Utah on Saturday.

    Rangel got the nod over starting quarterback Alan Bowman, who’s still dressed out on the sideline. Bowman completed eight of his 22 passes (36.3%) for 89 yards and an interception in the first half, and Utah claimed a 10-3 lead.

    Rangel is a redshirt sophomore who has made nine previous appearances throughout his time with OSU, including four starts. He entered the day with 918 career passing yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions.

    OSU forced its first three-and-out of the game, resulting in a short Utah punt.

    Utah had two short runs and an incomplete pass from QB Isaac Wilson.

    Thanks to three defensive takeaways, OSU trails only 10-3 at the half.

    Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson, playing in place of injured starter Cameron Rising, was 11 of 17 in the first half for 132 yards, but he was intercepted twice and Utah fumbled once.

    On the other side, the Cowboys offense had one good drive but otherwise looked inept.

    Ollie Gordon II rushed six times for 16 yards, and quarterback Alan Bowman has been off most of the day. He finished the half 8 of 22 for 89 yards with one interception. He completed just two of his last 12 attempts.

    OSU’s defense prevented further Utah points off a Cowboy turnover thanks to Trey Rucker’s interception at the 9-yard line, maintaining a 10-3 Utah lead.

    It’s the third turnover between the teams in the last two minutes of the half.

    OSU ran one play and the clock ran out on the second quarter

    Alan Bowman threw across his body when on the run to his right and was intercepted by Utah’s Alaka’i Gilman at the OSU 37.

    Bowman is 8 of 22 on the day.

    The Utes had just turned the ball over on a fumble recovered by Nick Martin.

    OSU’s Logan Ward missed wide from 46 yards and the Cowboys trail 10-3 with 5:32 on the second quarter clock.

    Alan Bowman had some miscommunication with receivers on the drive, and also misfired  on a couple of throws, including a third-down attempt that was nearly intercepted. Bowman is 8 of 19 for 89 yards.

    Utah has owned the time of possession, with 15:15 to 9:13 for the Cowboys to this point.

    Utah tight end Brant Kuithe took a direct snap and ran in for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Utes a 10-3 lead with 7:25 left in the second quarter. 

    The Utes had back-to-back 60-plus-yard scoring drives that totaled 23 plays in all, with the OSU offense managing just a three-and-out in between. The heat and long drives seemed to result in a tired Cowboy defense late in the touchdown drive.

    After a short kickoff return to the 13-yard line, OSU couldn’t move the ball and went three-and-out for the third time of the game.

    Just like the first drive of the game, OSU had an empty run by Ollie Gordon II and two incomplete passes before the 51-yard punt from Hudson Kaak.

    Utah’s Cole Becker hit a 43-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game at 3. 

    Utah moved into the red zone, but a sack by Xavier Ross moved the Utes back for the field goal try. OSU’s Kendal Daniels also had a sack on the drive.

    OSU running back Sesi Vailahi came up a yard short on a third-down run and the Cowboys were forced to punt. 

    Hudson Kaak pinned the Utes at their 13.

    The Cowboys remain on top 3-0 with 5:39 left in the first quarter.

    OSU safety Trey Rucker came up with his first interception of the season, snagging a deep throw by Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson. 

    It is the fourth interception by the OSU defense this season. 

    The Cowboys take over at their own 41.

    OSU took a 3-0 lead on a 23-yard field goal by Logan Ward at the 8:43 mark of the first quarter after a strong drive that ran out of gas inside the 5. 

    OSU had success running the ball and throwing, but couldn’t close the door on a touchdown drive.

    The Cowboys unveiled a Wildcat formation with Ollie Gordon II at quarterback and Brennan Presley at running back, with Gordon handing to Presley on a rushing play.

    OSU also debuted a previously unused three-receiver set with all three receivers bunched all the way at the sideline.

    OSU’s Lyrik Rawls knocked away a fourth-down pass to end Utah’s first possession of the game at the OSU 32 yard line.

    Utah did not start regular quarterback Cameron Rising, who has been out with a hand laceration. Instead, it was freshman Isaac Wilson at QB for the Utes.

    An empty Ollie Gordon II run and two wide passes by quarterback Alan Bowman ended OSU’s first drive.

    The Cowboys punted just past midfield, where Utah took over.

    With the air temperature measured at 100 degrees at kickoff, the Cowboy Radio Network reported much higher temperatures on the turf of Boone Pickens Stadium. 

    OSU sideline reporter Robert Allen said the temperature on the turf measured 161 degrees just before the game began.

    Utah quarterback Cameron Rising was wearing a glove on his throwing hand throughout his team’s pregame throwing drills, and the expected starter went through the same routine as the other Utah quarterbacks in warmups.

    It is anticipated that he will attempt to play against the Cowboys on Saturday, though it is unclear how close to full health his right hand is two weeks after suffering a cut on one of his fingers.

    OSU remains without starting right tackle Jake Springfield for a second straight game, according to OSU radio voice Dave Hunziker. 

    Springfield missed last week’s game at Tulsa and remains a week-to-week case as he battles an undisclosed injury. Isaia Glass is expected to fill the void at right tackle, as he did last week.

    Beyond that, the Cowboys are still without linebackers Collin Oliver and Justin Wright, but have no new injuries this week.

    Utah quarterback Cameron Rising took the field to begin pregame workouts shortly after 1 p.m. wearing a glove on his right hand, which suffered the laceration that kept him out the last 1 ½ games. His status remains a game-time decision, as initially reported by ESPN, though the is expected to attempt to play.
