‘I loved and respected you very much’

Zayn Malik is reminiscing about his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne. In a heartfelt tribute posted to Instagram on Thursday, a day after Payne’s death at the age of 31, Malik honored Payne and remembered his support and “comforting smile” while in One Direction.

“Liam, I find myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me. I can’t help but selfishly think that we could have had so many more conversations in our lives,” Malik wrote. “I could never thank you for your support during the most difficult times of my life. When I was missing home as a 17-year-old child, you were always there with a positive attitude and a reassuring smile, letting me know that you were my friend and that I was loved.

“Even though you were younger than me, you were always wiser than me. You were stubborn, opinionated and didn’t give a fuck about telling people when they were wrong,” Malike continued. “Even though we have butted heads a few times over this, I have always secretly respected you for it.”

Malik went on to recall Payne’s professionalism when they were placed in One Direction, and how he was “the most qualified in every way” to be in the group. “I was always happy to know that no matter what happened on stage, we could always rely on you to know which way to turn the ship next,” he said.

“I lost a brother when you left us and I can’t explain to you what I would give if I could hug you one last time and say goodbye to you in a proper way and tell you that I love you very much you loved and you respected,” Malik added. . “I will forever cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart.”

Malik ended his post by saying he hoped Payne is “well and at peace.” He paired the post with a throwback photo of the two sleeping on a car ride, writing in the caption, “I love you bro.”

Malik’s tribute came just minutes after Louis Tomlinson remembered Payne as the “most vital part” of One Direction, saying he was “really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.” Malik, Tomlinson and 1D bandmates Harry Styles and Niall Horan previously issued a joint statement saying they were “completely devastated” by the news of Payne’s death.

“Over time, and when everyone is able to do so, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, whom we loved dearly,” the band wrote. “The memories we shared with him will be cherished forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

Earlier on Thursday, Argentina’s public prosecutor’s office shared a post-autopsy report showing Payne died of multiple trauma, internal and external bleeding and skull injuries as a result of his fall.
