NFL News, Injury Updates: 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk tore ACL, Jets’ Xavier Newman released from hospital

The injury report coming out on Sunday of Week 7 of the NFL season features some big names at the top and some potentially season-altering injuries for several teams around the league. The most serious situation of the weekend occurred during the Jets vs. Steelers Sunday Night Football game, when New York guard Xavier Newman was carted off the field on a backboard and taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with a neck injury. Fortunately, initial reports say Newman was conscious and moving his limbs when he was taken from Acrisure Stadium.

Other stars, including Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson, Washington’s Jayden Daniels and San Francisco’s Brandon Ayiuk all left their games early Sunday with injuries. Here’s a look at the news and comments from week 7.

The scary scene that unfolded at Acrisure Stadium was ultimately a precautionary measure. Jets guard Xavier Newman underwent testing after a neck injury and the tests came back negative due to serious injury. He was able to return to New York with the team after the Jets’ 37–15 loss to the Steelers. Although the Jets confirmed the neck injury after the game, the extent of the injury is not yet known.

It’s another crushing injury for the Browns quarterback, whose career has been marred by scandals, suspensions and lengthy stays on injured reserve. Watson was carted off the field during Cleveland’s 21-14 loss to the Bengals after going down with a non-contact injury.

On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that an MRI confirmed Watson has a torn Achilles tendon, which will cost him at least the remainder of the 2024 season. In his three seasons in Cleveland, after signing a five-year, $230 million contract, Watson played just six games in each of the three years.

In another crushing blow to the 49ers offense, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL in San Francisco’s 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Aiyuk sat out of camp this offseason, signing a four-year, $120 million extension with $76 million in guaranteed money just before the regular season started. The 49ers offense has been decimated by injury this season, with George Kittle missing a game and Christian McCaffrey not playing at all in 2024 due to Achilles tendonitis.

The leading candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year left Washington’s 40-7 win over Carolina with a rib injury. Although they didn’t miss a second in the comfortable victory without him, any moment on the injury report could be short-lived – if his mother is to be taken at her word. During the game, she posted “He’s fine” on X, and Daniels finished the game on the sidelines during warm-ups.

Live11 updates

  • 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk out for season with torn ACL, MCL

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver suffered a knee injury during their 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, tests confirmed Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Aiyuk has a torn ACL and ACL, and there could be further damage to his knee. He will undergo surgery in the near future.

Aiyuk received a pass across the middle of the field late in the first half of Sunday’s match at Levi’s Stadium, but his knee gave way hard when he was hit and brought down. Ayiuk stayed on the field for quite some time before finally walking into the medical tent. He was eventually carted off to the locker room and ruled out of the match.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the team feared he had suffered an ACL injury.

  • Dolphins WR was placed on IR after reportedly tearing his ACL against Colts

The Dolphins wide receiver and return specialist suffered the injury in the fourth quarter on a kickoff return in their 16-10 loss to the Colts.

  • DK Metcalf “week to week” with grade 1 MCL sprain

Metcalf landed hard on a catch attempt in the third quarter of the Seahawks’ win over the Falcons.

“On that sideline shot, he hit his knee a little bit,” Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said. “I’m not sure what the severity is. We are optimistic at the moment, so it doesn’t look bad.”

The Seahawks will take on the Bills on Sunday in Week 8.

  • Commanders QB Jayden Daniels “week to week”

The Commanders’ rookie QB left Sunday’s 40-7 win over the Panthers early with a rib injury after several hard hits.

Daniels was ruled out after half-time after initially being doubtful to return. After the game, his mother, Regina Jackson, posted on X that her son was doing “fine.”

The Commanders face the Bears on Sunday.

If Tagovailoa clears concussion protocol, he would be available to play in Sunday’s Dolphins game against the Cardinals.

  • There will be no QB change for Giants

Jones has 1,442 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games this season.

  • Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks

  • No news yet on QB Jayden Daniels’ health after a rib injury

The commanders, like all of us, are waiting for news on Jayden Daniels’ health. He left Washington’s 40-7 win over the Panthers early with what turned out to be a rib injury. Mike Jones of the Athletic reports that it could be a few days before we know anything about Daniels’ status for Sunday’s game against the Bears.

  • Mike Tomlin is enjoying the results of Russell Wilson’s decision

After the Steelers’ 37-15 thumping of the Jets on Sunday night, head coach Mike Tomlin sat at the podium and answered questions about one of his boldest decisions yet: starting veteran QB Russell Wilson over young Justin Fields.

Tomlin is perhaps the most professional coach in the entire NFL. He used the press not to absorb compliments, but to honestly assess the game his team was playing. But he allowed a moment of levity to wrap things up, when retired NFL wide receiver and Pittsburgh native Brandon Marshall stopped by to ask him a question.
