Player Ratings: Real Madrid 5 – 2 Borussia Dortmund; 2024 UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Full match player ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois-9: The miracle man continues to make save after save – can he now be called St. Thibaut? The close leg-heel save in the 82nd minute was the icing on the cake that kept Madrid at 2-2 in the match.

Lucas Vazquez-5.5: For a player who prides himself on his physical level, he looked way off the pace. I’ve never seen Lucas’ legs so heavy. For the second goal he ran the length of the pitch, but that should not be an excuse for being beaten by the ball. In the second half he made up for it with the winning goal in the 83rd minute, making it 3–2.

Antonio Rudiger-8: Brilliant headed goal after parading into the penalty area that broke the dam and started the second half goal rush.

Eder Militao-6: Very direct with his passing, hitting a number of long-range balls to Vinicius and Mbappe.

Ferland Mendy-4: There is no need to double Guirassy and free Malen in the penalty area. Much of Madrid’s first goal will depend on Mendy’s decision-making.

Luka Modric—7: Orchestrator in the second half, keeping the ball circulation fast and vertical.

Valverde-6: Played as the sole defensive pivot for most of the match. The team’s disjointed pressing in the first half saw him cover too much ground. Improved with the rest of the team in the second half.

Bellingham-7.5: Will be frustrated if I didn’t score a goal in this match. Played centrally and had much more involvement in goal, hitting the crossbar and almost scoring with a header from inside the six-yard box after a late point. At times he would unnecessarily run to the press while the rest of the team held their position, creating huge gaps. His effort and attitude were eventually rewarded with a slide tackle near his own penalty area, which set Vini up for the fourth goal.

Rodrygo-7: Made a huge shift defensively and covered a lot of ground. Hit the crossbar in the first half and was part of the play that led to the winning goal in the second half.

Vinicius Junior-9: Historic individual achievements of UCL. Exceeded in the second half to score a hat-trick with goals any player would be proud of, including a 60-yard carry with the ball that ended with a clinical strike from outside the penalty area. Balon D’Or loading…

Kylian Mbappe – 7: Much improved in the second half, using his sudden burst of speed from a standing position to create separation. One such moment down the right flank opened the match with the first goal. Mbappé’s cross was perfectly weighted so Rudiger whipped in the header.

Replacements:

Eduardo Camavinga-7: Produced a number of screwed passes through the defense from the edge of the opponent’s penalty area.

Tchouameni-n/a: Late substitution for the injured Rodrygo immediately after Madrid were 3-2 ahead in the 83rd minute.

Arda Guler – N/A: Created the fifth and final goal after winning the ball back near the center circle and then freeing Vinicius on the counter.

Dani Ceballos – N/A: Good in tight spaces, moving the ball and maintaining possession.
