Tarrytown tavern fire sparks massive response, Main Street closed

Early this morning a four-alarm fire broke out in the basement of a three-storey commercial building in the heart of Tarrytown.

According to fire officials, 911 calls came in at 4:30 a.m. about smoke coming from 27 Main St. The building houses the Tarry Tavern bar and restaurant and two apartments on the second and third floors.

The residents got out safely, but Tarrytown First Assistant Chief Patrick Derivan says the flames entered the walls and spread from the basement to the top floor, making it a stubborn fire to fight.

Firefighters from more than a dozen departments in the region came to help. About 75 to 100 first responders were on the scene as firefighters worked frantically to keep the flames from spreading to the other buildings. They were able to contain the fire to the other building.

It took about three hours to get the fire under control as Main Street and many surrounding streets were closed. No one was injured and the cause is not yet known.
