Musk says Americans will face “hardships” if Trump wins

Elon Musk has a new message for Americans about what to expect from a possible second Donald Trump presidency: suffering.

As Rolling Stone reports, Musk, who Trump has promised will oversee the “efficiency” of government agencies if he is elected president, said during a virtual town hall on Friday that Americans will have to endure “temporary hardships” if Trump wins.

As Rolling Stone reported:

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, said that if Donald Trump wins and gives him a role in government, Americans will suffer “hardships” as a result of efforts to tackle the national debt. He made the comments Friday in a virtual town hall on his website, “Most importantly, we must reduce spending to continue living within our means,” he said, adding that these efforts “will bring temporary hardship, but it will create long-term prosperity.”

How long will that hardship last? As long as Musk claims it’s necessary, it seems. And he went on to suggest that his plans could spark a fierce backlash. According to Rolling Stone:

Later, Musk said he would “balance the budget immediately,” adding: “Obviously, a lot of people who abuse the government are going to be angry about that. I probably need a lot of security, but it has to be done. And if it doesn’t happen, we’ll just go bankrupt.”

There is no evidence that the United States is at risk of going bankrupt. But other than that, it’s creepy that he is al deeply paranoid about the steep cuts that he was not even allowed to make. If a plan is so extreme that its very wealthy creator devises ways to insulate himself from public unrest, we can expect it to be incredibly unpopular. The whole ‘you-must-suffer-for-your-country’ thing certainly smacks of authoritarian propaganda. And I think we can all be sure that Musk – a billionaire many times over and who has already benefited enormously from government investments – will face no real hardship if his plan is ever implemented.

Speaking at Trump’s rally in New York City last weekend, Musk said he thinks he can cut about 30% of the federal budget.

For the record, this plan would match the cuts implemented by Argentina’s far-right, pro-Trump president, Javier Milei, who has built a cult following in today’s Republican Party. And if that’s Musk’s model, Americans have a lot to fear.

These policies helped push Argentina’s poverty rate to over 50% in the first six months of Milei’s presidency. The hardships Musk predicts sound pretty harsh indeed. Between Trump repeatedly praising the Gilded Age and Musk preparing ordinary Americans for “hardships” if MAGA retakes the White House, it seems pretty clear that a vote for Trump is a vote for. extreme wealth inequality and all the suffering that comes with it.
