West Indies defeated England by eight wickets in the first ODI in Antigua with Gudakesh Motie and Evin Lewis as stars

Gudakesh Motie took 4/41 and Evin Lewis played a 69-ball 94 in a rain-deprived first ODI against England as West Indies raced to a dominant win with 55 balls to spare

England handed out four ODI debuts to their team squad, with John Turner, Dan Mousley, Jamie Overton and Jordan Cox all making their first appearances in the format.

And the team’s inexperience was evident as they struggled to adapt to the surface and were bowled out for 209 with 4.5 overs remaining, with Liam Livingstone top scoring with 48 in his first match as captain .

A rain shower during the break delayed the second innings, and a second weather delay caused overs in the match to be lost.

But West Indies took full control, after enduring a tough spell with the new ball of the impressive Jofra Archer and John Turner.

Evin Lewis, making his second appearance after a three-year break from international cricket, played a starring role, hitting eight sixes in his 94 to post his 11th ODI half-century and go beyond 2,000 career runs in the format .

Earlier, West Indies bowled well, making use of the cross-seam variations, with pacers Jayden Seales, Matthew Forde and Alzarri Joseph taking two each. Seales in particular was difficult for England to get away with, conceding just 22 runs in his eight overs. Spinner Motie returned the choice of figures and took 4/41.

The teams will resume the series at the same ground on Saturday, with the match kicking off at 1.30pm GMT and broadcast live on TNT Sports and Discovery+.

Talking Point – England fail to build on starts

Every member of England’s top six reached double figures in the first innings, with Jordan Cox’s 17 being the lowest of these. But none reached fifty, with Livingstone’s 48 being the best performance among them.

Each set batsman struggled to increase the scoring rate, with miscues and leading edge accounting for almost all of England’s wickets.

There was encouragement for England, with Jacob Bethell and Cox showing why they are so highly rated in the set-up, and Sam Curran reminding the selectors why he is a viable left-handed option in the top order with a solid rebuilding knock of 37.

But the team’s lack of experience in this area was evident, and too often they were unable to get through tough periods without taking an overly risky approach.

Player of the Match – Evin Lewis (West Indies)

The bowling attack might have ensured the victory and Motie took the official POTM award, but it was left-handed opening bat Lewis who lit up North Sound in Antigua. The 32-year-old delivered a powerful display of top-class batting, displaying a fluidity that no other batsman could master on a sticky surface.

Lewis was left out of the West Indies line-up for more than three years, but made his return last week in the final match against Sri Lanka, with a brilliant 102*.

And he continued that excellent comeback to put England to the sword, surpassing more than 2000 career ODI runs over the course of his 94. He made a hundred but missed the milestone by heading for the milestone in style and left with victory within reach.

Lewis had done well to bide his time when the ball started moving early on, but when he released the ball he did so against both pace and spin, storming the stands brilliantly and hitting five fours and eight sixes hit.
