Bernie Sanders criticizes Democratic Party after Trump victory: ‘Abandoned working class’

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., issued a scathing statement Wednesday incinerating the Democratic Party after Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 presidential election.

Senator Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats but remains a registered independent, accused the Democratic Party of turning its back on black and Latino working-class voters.

“While Democratic leaders defend the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they are right,” wrote Senator Sanders.

Vice President Kamala Harris failed to build on President Joe Biden’s support among Black and Latino voters, who shifted toward President-elect Donald Trump in several battleground states. Senator Sanders claims that the economic strain such voters continue to face has left them frustrated with the Democratic Party.

“Today, while the very wealthy are doing phenomenally well, 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and we have more income and wealth inequality than ever before,” Senator Sanders wrote. “Unbelievably, real inflation-based weekly wages for the average American worker are actually lower now than they were fifty years ago.”

Senator Sanders also pointed to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, a lack of affordable healthcare and the threat of AI replacing jobs as three major reasons why American voters are dissatisfied with their federal government.

“Will the big money interests and highly paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign?” asked Senator Sanders.

He concluded his statement by teasing “political discussions” in the coming weeks with “those of us concerned about grassroots democracy and economic justice,” and encouraged readers to “stay informed.”
