WCSD releases new details about the incident that prompted school closures

SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County School District is releasing new information about the incident that caused a lockdown at two area schools on Wednesday.

On November 6, staff at Robert Mitchell Elementary School contacted school police to report a disturbance or possible fight near the school campus, possibly involving middle school students. They reported that one person appeared to be injured and was missing clothing.

A few minutes later, as school police responded to that area, another report was received from Sparks High School staff, who advised of a student armed with a folding knife on campus. As a result of both reports, Sparks High School and Robert Mitchell Elementary School were placed on lockdown.

School police and staff have arrested a student suspect. The school district says those involved in the incident have been identified and the pocket knives have been recovered.

One person was treated for minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

One other person was arrested for disrupting school and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and other criminal charges are pending.

School police say this was an isolated incident between private parties and there is no evidence of gang ties.
