Ryan Walters requires Oklahoma students to watch prayer videos, some districts choose not to

State Superintendent Ryan Walters has sent an email to every Oklahoma superintendent saying he is requiring all Oklahoma schools to play an approximately 90-second video for all enrolled children and send it to their parents.

At least one district, Edmond Public Schools, says OSDE remembered the email sent to them. News 9 has reached out to OSDE for clarification on the email recall.

In the video, Walters prays for Oklahoma children and emphasizes that students do not have to pray with him.

He also explains why he established the Ministry of Religious Freedom and Patriotism within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its role.

“Dear God, thank you for all the blessings you have given our country. I pray that our leaders will make the right decisions. I especially pray for President Donald Trump and his team as they continue to effect change in our country,” Walters said. says in the video.

EPS announced it would not show a prayer video to students after receiving conflicting messages from Walters.

An EPS spokesperson said Superintendent Angela Grunewald received an email from Walters late Thursday evening containing the video of Walters praying and instructions for Oklahoma school districts to allow students to view it.

However, within 45 minutes of the initial email, EPS received a recall notice from the Oklahoma Department of Education indicating Walters was attempting to retract the notice, the district spokesperson said. As a result, the district decided not to show the video to students, despite several inquiries from parents asking if they could opt out of the view.

Jenks Public Schools also said they do not plan to play the video to students at this time.

Bixby Superintendent Rob Miller responded to the video by saying his district has no plans to show the video to students. He confirmed that his district had also received the recall notice, but said the original video and email had been resent without changes.

“Yes, I received the email from the superintendent. We have no plans to share the message with families or students at this time,” Miller said.

Miller does Sue Walters for defamation after the state inspector called him a “liar” and a “clown” to an Oklahoma State Board of Education meeting. Walters made these comments in response to Miller’s criticism of his processing of Title I funds.
