The release date of Skeleton Crew on Disney Plus is moving up

Good news for those eager to see Skeleton Crew on Disney Plus in December. The Star Wars show just pushed back its release date to a day earlier than before.

Previously, Skeleton Crew was set to air on December 3, but now Disney will announce its release date on Monday. Releases December 2 at 6pm PT, 9pm ET. Why? Who knows, but I like it when Disney does releases at night instead of at 3am while trying to avoid spoilers the entire next day.

Here’s the official synopsis of the Goonies-inspired Skeleton Crew, in case you forgot:

“Skeleton Crew tells the story of four children who search for their home planet after becoming lost in the Star Wars galaxy, and the strange aliens and dangerous places they encounter during their adventure.”

The biggest mystery is the character of Jude Law, who at first appears to be some kind of sleeping Jedi, but there are hints that his character may be more complicated than that, as tends to happen with these things lately. This show takes place five years after Return of the Jedi, where there’s… there’s not supposed to be a Jedi wandering around who isn’t named Skywalker, with a few exceptions. Jude Law could be one of them.

While Skeleton Crew will undoubtedly be watched by adult fans, the series is primarily aimed at kids in a way that not many recent Star Wars projects have been, from Andor to The Acolyte. Its creator, Jon Watts, sees it as a way to get new fans “on board” without any prior knowledge of the universe. You might think the right way to get new Star Wars fans on board is A New Hope, but here’s what he said:

“I’m glad people are seeing Skeleton Crew because it’s the same Star Wars universe you know and love. It’s just a new perspective. The ability to see that world through the eyes of four 10-year-old kids , I think this is a completely new way to enter this world that some of us know and love, and some of us may have never experienced before.”

There are reports that Skeleton Crew may be a Disney Star Wars series focusing on future seasons, rather than a one-off miniseries. That could happen if the viewership is large enough, although of course budget needs to be taken into account, and like all Disney Star Wars projects, it doesn’t look cheap. The Acolyte cost $180 million, was not viewed enough and was immediately canceled. Skeleton Crew suffers from the same problem of not having a ‘well-known’ Star Wars character to boost it, and with a big budget it can run into the same problems. We’ll find out soon.
