4 dead, 9 injured, suspect in custody

At least four people have died and nine are hospitalized after a shooting at a Georgia high school, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed.

In an updated post on X, formerly Twitter, the GBI, which is assisting with the investigation, also said a suspect is in custody and alive. They also said reports that the suspect had been “neutralized” were false.

Authorities have not disclosed how many children were among the victims.

CNN reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the suspect is a 14-year-old boy, but said it was unclear whether the suspect is a student at the school.

According to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported at 10:23 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to 11 Alive, Atlanta News First and ABC News.

The school was reportedly placed on lockdown after the shooting.

Atlanta News First reported that dozens of ambulances were seen outside the school, with a medical helicopter hovering overhead.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said He has allocated all available state resources to the school.

President Joe Biden said in a statement shared by the White House on Wednesday afternoon that he “mourns the deaths” of the shooting victims and that he is “thinking of all the survivors whose lives have been changed forever.”

“What should have been a joyous start to the school year in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into yet another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart. Students across the country are being taught how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write,” the president said. “We can no longer accept this as normal.”

Biden added: “We are working closely with officials at the federal, state and local levels and are grateful to the first responders who apprehended the suspect and prevented further loss of life.”

Winder is located approximately 50 miles outside of Atlanta.
