4 RB Bengals could add near trade deadline after Zack Moss’ injury

(This story has been updated to add new information.)

The Cincinnati Bengals needed running back Zack Moss to suffer a serious injury.

Moss and Chase Brown were an effective duo, but the Bengals couldn’t reasonably continue with a two-deep rotation for 17 games, if not more.

With Brown now the sole workhorse, the position becomes an even greater need before the NFL trade deadline. Here are some names that may be available.

UPDATE: The Bengals traded for Khalil Herbert before the deadline on Tuesday morning.

Khalil Herbert, Bears

Herbert has fallen out of favor in Chicago, but he’s still the guy who averaged 4.8 yards per carry in his career. He has also caught 45 passes with two scores. He’s also in the final year of his rookie deal, so the Bengals could play the short or long game with him depending on how things go.

Travis Etienne Jr., Jaguars

The former first-round pick could be a big part of a fire sale for the Jaguars. He’s way out of favor in Jacksonville now that Tank Bigsby’s breakout is happening. But Etienne may just need a change of scenery and averaging 4.4 yards per carry and 8.0 yards per catch could make a jump in a Joe Burrow offense. He has one year left on his rookie contract at around $6 million.

Chuba Hubbard, Panthers

Everyone seems to be mentioning Miles Sanders as the running back Carolina could trade. But his contract is too much for the Bengals. However, a guy like Chuba Hubbard might make more sense. The former fourth-rounder is averaging better than four yards per carry and just caught the Bengals for 104 yards and a score in late September. He also has an expiring contract.

Jeff Wilson, Dolphins

Wilson is an explosive back who is simply buried in a logjam with the Dolphins. But he’s averaging 4.5 yards per carry in his career and is a proven option in the passing game. Like the others, it wouldn’t cost too much to purchase and it has an expiring contract.

Free agents

  • Jerick McKinnon
  • James Robinson
  • Matt Breida

These are just a few names to keep in mind if the Bengals choose to look on the open market. Trading for one of the names above may be a better option, but the price must be right for both parties.
