5 Lessons from the Bills’ Convincing 31-10 Win over the Dolphins

The Buffalo Bills came into the first half of their Week 2 Thursday Evening Football clash and “Cook” went all the way to the Miami Dolphins, building a 24-10 lead before the half was over. Buffalo’s defense was excellent in the second half before Tua Tagovailoa was forced to leave with an unfortunate concussion, and the Dolphins’ offense struggled even more afterward. Buffalo moves to 2-0 and into first place in the AFC East with the 31-10 victory.

Here are five lessons we learned from the Bills’ convincing Week 2 win.

Christian Benford

The Dolphins took the opening kickoff and seemingly decided they didn’t want the ball, when Tagovailoa threw a pick to Ja’Marcus Ingram on a pass that was broken up by Christian Benford. Buffalo turned that first turnover into a 17-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen to James Cook. Late in the first quarter, Tagovailoa knocked down Robbie Chosen, and Benford was in the right place at the right time to score the Bills’ second pick of the game. Buffalo would convert it into three points on a 43-yard field goal by Tyler Bass.

Ingram threw another interception in the third quarter, taking it home. Buffalo’s secondary forced three turnovers that night, all of which directly led to points and thus contributed greatly to the team’s victory.

Terrel Bernard

Terrel Bernard went out early in the game with what was reported as a pectoral injury. He was initially listed as questionable, but was declared out for the game after halftime. We should have more information on his injury and future status soon, but fortunately the Bills have a week and a half to recover. Baylon Spector played well at times in his absence, but also had some plays he would like to see back. Regardless, Bernard is an integral part of Buffalo’s defense, a team captain he can’t afford to miss for an extended period of time, especially given the absences of Taron Johnson and Matt Milano.

Josh Allen

Aside from a fumbled shotgun snap that didn’t appear to be entirely his fault, Allen’s injured left hand didn’t appear to be a problem. The fumble occurred with Allen’s right hand, not his injured hand. The Bills and Allen now have a week and a half to rest his ailment before the team’s Week 3 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They’ll need him to be healthy, with their next four games against the Jaguars, followed by the Ravens, Texans and Jets, all of which are away games.

For the second straight week, the Bills offensive line was outstanding. They opened up holes for James Cook and Ray Davis for big gains on the ground, including both touchdown runs by Cook. The line kept Allen mostly clean, giving him time in the pocket to find his targets. Allen was not sacked or hit in the game, and the pressure was almost nonexistent. Cook averaged 7.1 yards per carry behind the Bills line, and 4.2 as a team.

Jaylen Waddle

Despite all the talk the Dolphins get for their dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the Bills defense held them in check. The duo accounted for just seven receptions, 65 yards, and no touchdowns. The two were targeted ten times combined, but neither ever got going. Sean McDermott’s defense has generally fared well against Hill in recent years. This was also a testament to the performance of Buffalo’s secondary with new starting safeties Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin. Even Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop saw some snaps in this game and made plays.
