‘Agatha All Around’ Star Patti LuPone On That Sigil, Channels Glinda In The Next Trial (Exclusive)

This article contains spoilers from Agatha all the time episodes 1-6.

Apparently that sign was more powerful than we thought.

Episode 6 of Agatha all the timeTitled “Familiar by Thy Side,” it revealed that Patti LuPone’s fortune-teller Lilia Calderu was the one who cast the identity-masking spell on Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke) after foreseeing the Eastview boy would die in a car accident at the age of 13, causing his body to be inhabited by the spirit of Wanda’s witch son, Billy Maximoff. A side effect of the sigil is that Lilia has no memory of casting it. The same goes for LuPone itself.

The Broadway legend is currently on stage in The roommate while Agatha all the time episodes appear week after week on Disney+. “The wig master and the prop master came to me individually and said, ‘Set the sign to Toe!’ I completely forgot about it,” says LuPone Entertainment weekly in an exclusive interview after episode 6 aired. “I said, ‘Oh yeah! I did that.'”

Now that the secret is out, Lilia will play a bigger role in answering some questions about this puzzle box series from showrunner Jac Schaeffer (WandaVision). Episode 7, which drops tonight at 6:00 PM PT/9:00 PM ET, features the Witch’s Way fortune-telling process. So it’s Lilia’s time to shine. And no, she and Sasheer Zamata’s Jennifer Kale didn’t die in the sinking mud after Locke’s Billy blew them off the road.

“Jac is so smart in how she can put the puzzle together and then solve it,” LuPone prefaces. “I didn’t connect the dots when I first read all the episodes. In 7, as Lilia’s powers awaken, she connects all these events we saw in the previous episodes. There is an explanation for it.”

EW can reveal an exclusive clip of the trial from the episode (shown above), which features the remaining coven (RIP Alice and Mrs. Hart) dressed as iconic movie witches: Lilia as Glinda, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) as the Wicked Witch, Billy as Maleficent and Jen as the Evil Queen from Snow White. “Who would have thought I’d be playing Glinda, the good witch?” LuPone exclaims. “What is a closely guarded secret is that I am a comedian. I say this with irony, but Evita ruined my career. I came out Evita like this tycoon, bitch tap dancer, but my first Tony nomination was a slapstick comedy, with Rosalind in it The way you like it. The character was very goofy and sweet, but people don’t associate that aspect with me because of the roles I’ve played in musical theater. So Glinda wasn’t necessarily a challenge for me, Patti, even though it might seem that way to the majority of people who know my career. I Know that side of me.”

The sneak peek shows Lilia preparing to discover Billy’s path through cards, explaining how they work and what the table layout means. “That layout was, for lack of a better word, Jac’s invention,” LuPone points out. “I had to memorize it because it was very specific what each card will represent on your life journey. They will represent certain aspects: love, fate, fortune, profession.”

In previous interviews with EW, Locke called this episode the show’s best “purely because of Jac Schaeffer’s incredible form and storytelling,” while Hahn said it was “a childhood dream come true” to get into Wicked Witch mode opposite LuPone’s Glinda.

“I think I speak for many of us: We were breathless when we saw Patti as a good witch for the first time,” Hahn said. “It was so precious and perfect, and just the sweetest – not words you would normally (use) to describe this powerhouse on stage.”

LuPone further teases Lilia’s bond with Zamata’s Jen in the next hour on streaming television. “Sasheer and I talk about the essence of a witch in a way that hasn’t been discussed before in the episodes,” she says. “We’re still grumpy with each other – a little, not completely – and in this particular (episode) we bond as a unit. That, I think, is what Lilia needs to accomplish to reform that coven. And what is the definition of coven anyway? Protection of your soulmates, protection of the people you care about, recognition of that. I think there’s a lot of heart in it.”
