Tackle Injured Star Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wide Receiver Under NFL Review

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were hoping for a different outcome on Monday Night Football as they lost 41-31 to the Baltimore Ravens. The score is a bit deceptive, as the Bucs trailed 41-18 at one point and fought their way back to make it a game of sorts extremely late in the fourth quarter.

The Buccaneers fought hard despite going down so many times, but it came at a cost as wide receiver Mike Evans suffered a hamstring injury that will knock him out for a few weeks. But the even bigger price to pay for the Bucs in this one is what happened in the final minute of the game when their other star wide receiver Chris Godwin went down with a dislocated ankle, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. was offside.

Godwin’s injury caused controversy in the NFL world, with blame thrown at head coach Todd Bowles. The blame can be placed in many places, but at the end of the day these things are bound to happen when you play football.

On Monday, Adam Schefter reported that the league would indeed review Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith’s tackle because it reflected elements of a hip drop tackle, something that was banned this offseason after numerous similar injuries last season.

The NFL was planning to crack down and inform their referees to throw flags in such cases, but so far in the season, in retrospect, it doesn’t seem like much has changed. If the tackle does indeed meet the criteria for a hip drop tackle, Smith will be fined by the league.

It’s an unfortunate play and doesn’t have to be in the game, but when you’re playing at full speed it’s hard to maneuver your body to avoid something like what happened Monday night.

Godwin is one of the most beloved and highly regarded players in the league and was having arguably the best season of his career before the injury. We will all continue to support Godwin in his rehabilitation before he is released this season.
