Air Quality and Storm Warning with highs in the mid 90s

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A developing low pressure area and front to the northwest will shift south and east over the next 24 hours. With increased instability, extreme weather activity has decided to swell across the viewing area. Most of the region is now under an extreme weather risk level one. This means that isolated extreme storms are possible with wind gusts up to 60+ miles per hour with moderate hail. There is a small but unlikely chance for rotation.

The timing is likely to be between 18:00 and 20:00, and will continue into the night. However, there are signs of isolated storms developing towards the end of the afternoon, and a few isolated showers mid to late this morning cannot be ruled out. We do not expect a storm threat in the morning.

Temperatures will also be warm and steamy throughout the day. Morning highs in the upper 70s will be common, with lunchtime highs in the 90s and wind chills in the 100s. The peak of the day’s heat will come quickly, with 2pm seeing highs of 93-96 degrees in the metro. Wind chills can reach 105 degrees. This is probably not heat, advisory criteria, but we are still under a heat dome that will keep air quality lower this afternoon. An Air Quality Advisory has been issued after lunch today as we expect air quality to drop to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups with respiratory issues.

The heat and humidity will continue into Wednesday with isolated chances of showers and weak thunderstorms. Low 90s are expected with wind chills up to 102°.

Another First Warning will follow on Thursday as a cold front develops more showers and storm activity and a new level of severe weather threat. We are expecting new data that could shift this severe weather risk to I-70, so stay tuned for the latest on the wet weather threat.

Once the storm system passes by on Friday, temperatures will take a big dive in the late morning. Low 90s are expected on Thursday, but lower 80s are expected for Friday’s forecast. These low 80s will continue into the weekend with low temperatures between 57° and 63°. The chance of rain and storms will disappear just in time for the weekend.
