The Guardians

Cleveland succumbed to a wild night in the Bronx, losing 5-2 in Game 1.

After starter Alex Cobb found himself in a big jam, first-year manager Stephen Vogt opted to go with rookie Joey Cantillo in a crowded spot with the bases loaded.

As catcher Bo Naylor struggled behind the plate, Cantillo’s control was disastrous, sending multiple balls over the plate, ultimately allowing two runs to be scored in the third. He threw a Cleveland postseason record four wild pitches on a nail-biting stretch.

Cleveland fell behind 4-0 in the fourth.

Pedro Avila delivered 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball with one strikeout.

Brayan Rocchio gave the offense life with a solo shot in the sixth, while Steven Kwan continued his hot streak with an RBI single in the eighth. those were the first two runs the New York bullpen has allowed all postseason.

Hoping to earn a split in the Bronx, Cleveland will turn to their best arm in the rotation, Tanner Bibee.

Surprisingly, the meat of the Guardians bullpen wasn’t touched last night. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin and, if necessary, Emmanuel Clase will be ready for the spotlight when their time is called. It is the first time this postseason that all four did not appear.

Steven Kwan has hit in all six of his postseason games and has an 11-game postseason hitting streak dating back to the 2022 ALDS. He is sporting a .480 batting average this postseason. Kwan went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Game 1. He has three multi-hit games in his last four games.

Brayan Rocchio quietly scored eight goals in six games this postseason. He ties a Cleveland franchise record for longest hitting streak and begins a postseason career along with Lonnie Chisenhall and Jhonny Peralta.

The Yankees

Starting with a solo home run from Juan Soto in the third inning, New York’s high-powered lineup took down Cobb and found itself in a favorable spot against Cantillo. His wild arm put three on board and the Bronx bombers went to work.

Aaron Judge and Stanton both scored on wild pitches. Stanton also crushed one into the stands in the seventh, increasing the Yankees’ lead to 5–1.

New York drew seven walks in Game 1.

Carlos Rodon delivered a strong start, allowing three hits and one run while striking out nine in six innings of work. Now they will hand it over to their ace, Gerrit Cole. The pitching from New York retired a total of 14 Guardians in the opener.

New York will look to take a 2-0 lead and move closer to their first World Series appearance since 2009.

After playing 15 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, the Yankees bullpen finally let something slip when Tim Hill was charged with an earned run in the eighth inning. Clay Holmes and closer Luke Weaver combined for 2 2/3 scoreless work. Weaver picked up his fourth save with a five-out closeout in 24 pitches.

Juan Soto started the series with a bang, hitting a home run in the third to break the scoreless tie and start an important inning. He finished 2-for-3 that night. In five postseason games, Soto is hitting .353 with one home run, one double and three RBI. In 13 career games against the Guardians, Soto has a .295 average with four doubles, five home runs and 12 RBI.

Giancarlo Stanton continued his hot streak with an insurance blast in the seventh. It was his second home run of the postseason and his 13th postseason bomb overall. Stanton is hitting .368 with five RBI.

Tonight’s pitching game

(NY) Gerrit Cole (1-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. (CLE) Tanner Bibee (0-0, 2.08)

Cole is the definition of an ace. Cleveland had to go through presumptive 2024 AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, and now they will face the reigning AL Cy Young winner. On August 22 against the Guardians, Cole pitched six innings, allowing one hit and zero runs. He also struck out two and walked five.

He owns a 1.25 WHIP with eight strikeouts in two games this postseason and has won his last three decisions. He shut down the Royals in Game 4 of the ALDS, finishing with seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run.

Cole went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 99 strikeouts in the regular season.

Facing Cole at Yankee Stadium in his third career postseason start is a dream matchup for Bibee. He has recorded two no decisions, although these turned out to be wins over the Guardians, and has struck out nine with a WHIP of 1.27 in his first two starts. He claimed just one career start against New York, picking up the win in five innings with five strikeouts, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He has allowed a total of two runs in 8 2/3 innings of work in the postseason campaign.

Bibee went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA and recorded 187 strikeouts in the regular season. Cleveland is 24-9 overall when Bibee takes the mound this season.

Here’s part of a story about Cantillo’s wild night in the Bronx in Game 1 from cleveland.com Guardians beat writer Paul Hoynes.

NEW YORK – Give rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo an A for effort.

Not so much because of what he did on the mound Monday night in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, but what he did next. This is about how Cantillo handled things after throwing four wild pitches in the Guardians’ 5-2 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Three of New York’s five runs came on Cantillo’s record number of wild pitches.

“My performance was the difference in the match,” Cantillo said. “So I live with that. I’m excited to see how we all go after it on Tuesday and the rest of the series.

Cantillo replaced right-hander Alex Cobb with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning after Cobb had back problems and a pinched left hip. Facing lefty Anthony Rizzo, Cantillo threw his first wild pitch, scoring Aaron Judge from third for a 2-0 lead. After walking Rizzo to load the bases, he threw another wild pitch to Alex Verdugo, giving Giancarlo Stanton a 3-0 lead.

“It wasn’t a matter of me not being prepared,” Cantillo said. “It was a matter of going in and doing what you had to do. That is execution. Tonight I did not execute. I will learn from it and be ready for the next opportunity.”
