Amazon’s discount store is here, and it’s full of junk

Chinese budget retailers like Temu and Shein made Amazon feel so insecure that it came up with its own version, Amazon Haul. The e-commerce giant had talked about launching a similar discount store with all items for under $20. It launched in beta today and is available as a separate tab in the Amazon phone app, titled Haul.

It kept its promise and imposed a price cap of $20 on most items under $10. The product categories include fashion, home, lifestyle and electronics. It says delivery time will be between one and two weeks, much longer than Amazon’s typical delivery times of within a week and a day or two if you’re a Prime member. However, the longer delivery times make sense because Amazon Haul products are shipped directly from a fulfillment center in Guangdong, China.

As you browse through the items you will quickly realize that they are of fairly poor quality, but nothing different from what Temu and Shein offer. Unlike regular Amazon, Amazon Haul is more for impulsive shopping during late-night doom scrolling. This may be why the feature is exclusive to mobile. It is similar to the in-app shopping feature that TikTok introduced in that it understands how impulse buying works.

Haul launched just in time for the holidays, although most of its products are too low quality to be considered decent gifts. Only a few items qualify as potential stocking stuffers or last-minute Secret Santa gifts. The platform offers items starting at $1, a 5% discount on orders over $50, and 10% off orders of $75 or more.

If you don’t see the Distances tab in your Amazon app, try updating the app in the store first. Then search “Haul” in the app’s search bar. If that doesn’t work, go to Haul on your desktop and scan the QR code with your phone.

If you’re wondering how a necklace, bracelet, and earring set can cost $3, the answer won’t shock you. According to the findings of the US Congressional Select Committee, discount retailers such as Shien and Temu use a model of labor exploitation that relies on underpaying and serious mistreatment of millions of Uighur Muslims living in China.

Let’s not forget it the Marketplace report that says many of these dirt-cheap items may contain toxic levels of lead in it to improve their colors, add weight and make them corrosion resistant.
