In summary

  • Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1 shows some Quick Settings tiles that expand when you hold them down.
  • The interface customization allows you to better communicate which tiles are displayed in the full screen settings.

Patience is key when it comes to Android 15, and while we typically expect the platform’s latest major release to debut with the year’s new Pixel phone, the Pixel 9 launched with last year’s Android 14. While we wait for Google to put the finishing touches on it, developers have already been hard at work on Android 15’s first major update, and yesterday we saw the company push out Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1. As more and more users try it out, we’ll be learning about all the changes it brings, and right now we’re taking a look at one of the subtler tweaks QPR1 brings.

Google is always thinking about Android’s user interface and how it responds to our input. Even small things, like the shape of a button or the way an element moves on the screen, can affect our understanding of how a developer expects us to interact with the system they’ve created. We just looked at a great example of this, with QPR1 Beta 1 adding an animation that helps communicate how your keyboard responds to a back gesture.

Another change along the same lines has been spotted by the unofficial Google News Telegram channel, this time regarding Quick Settings tiles. Starting with Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1, when you press and hold on a tile that takes you to another page, such as your Bluetooth or Wi-Fi settings, you’ll see the tile itself expand slightly when you interact with it.

This is just the sort of thing that’s both small and natural enough that you’d be forgiven for thinking that it already works that way. But right now, tiles just give you a nice little haptic kick before they launch into full screen.

As we said from the beginning, it is subtlebut it’s small changes like these that help make a mobile platform as intuitive and accessible as possible. Stay tuned for more Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1 changes.
