After a nice run from Trossard, who plays a pass through the penalty area, Saka has the ball back on the right flank and decides to play it inside for Thomas Partey.

Partet takes the ball and shoots. He drills it well as Martinez leaps over. The keeper gets a hand on the ball but can’t stop it and Arsenal’s lead is doubled.

76 min: Odegaard is awarded a free kick by Tielemans and takes a few seconds of added time. Unai Emery decides to make a few substitutions with Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley coming in for Amadou Onana and Lucas Digne.

73 min: Arsenal were fantastic at controlling games last season when they took the lead. They had the best defence in the Premier League and will have to show why tonight.

Villa have upped the tempo but, as usual with Arsenal, they have slowed down when in possession.

70 min: What can Aston Villa do now? They played well, but that goal changed the game. The home side must now press on and force Arsenal to defend more.

Despite that goal, the Gunners are not playing at their best and if Villa can improve, they are ready.

Leandro Trossard has only just come onto the pitch and his impact is immediate. Arsenal come down the right side of the pitch and Saka pulls the ball back from the byline.

It concerns Kai Havertz who is tackled by Morgan Rogers.

The loose ball rolls to Trossard, who fires it into the net.

Lucas Digne whips a free kick from the left flank into the penalty area and picks out Ezri Konsa at the far post. Konsa rises above everyone and heads the ball over the goal.

But none of his teammates can reach it and the ball bounces safely out of the field.

Odegaard receives the ball on the edge of the penalty area. He turns away from the nearest defender and slides Bukayo Saka between the lines.

Saka catches the ball and then tries to play it past Emi Martinez, who himself goes wide and clears the ball away from the winger.

Replays show that Saka was probably offside, but at least Arsenal were able to build some confidence by putting the ball in the net.

60 min: An hour into the game at Villa Park and things are starting to escalate. Martin Odegaard curls a shot into the hands of Martinez and the Villa keeper considers a possible counter-attack before deciding to block it.

However, the impasse must be broken.

57 min: Villa’s dominance continues as they are awarded a corner. The ball is thrown into the penalty area towards Amadou Onana who hits it with a header that flies over the bar.

The home fans are now singing and jumping around.

David Raya has just about kept Arsenal in this match. Amadou Onana fires a shot from the edge of the box and a deflection sends the ball bouncing off the crossbar.

Raya jumps to hit the ball up and lies on the ground as the ball comes back into play.

Ollie Watkins gets there first and throws the ball towards the goal, but Raya jumps up and hits the ball away with one hand!
